Hello BikeForums, I wanted to create a thread about vehicle detection systems. Mobileye has just come out this year http://www.mobileye.com. A system like this could be mounted to the back of a bicycle and emit a loud alarm when you are being approached by a fast moving vehicle from behind, possibly eliminating a significant portion of deadly bicycle crashes. Rear end collisions are particularly scary because you cannot see the driver coming at you. It costs a lot at this time, but I could really see this coming down in price. Questions/comments?

Get a mirror, cost alot less and is far more effective.

Go ya one better, require all idiot motorists to install one... it has one key feature: "Forward Collision Warning!"

Just what the world needs, another bell, buzzer, whistle, chime to be ignored and bug the **** out of everyone. When was the last time you ran out the parking lot to stop a thief when you heard a car alarm going off?

That sounds perfect. Shock a driver with a loud noise that they don't understand when they're in a danger zone behind you...

Bicycles are NOT the problem. Cars and drivers are the problem. No amount of stuff on a bicycle is going to help. In this culture, cars rule and unlike some European countries, that culture will never change until we run out of oil.

Driver has to actually be looking for an extra light to work. If driver is head down texting, you could be wrapped in Xmas lights and the driver won't see you.

A number of cars have systems like this that will actually brake the car when they detect objects in front, not just flash a light. I am not sure if they really slam on the brakes or just slow down giving you an extra half second, that alone could make a difference. The past few years they have been improved to detect small objects not just car sized. (they also do things like tighten the seatbelt and shift the headrest etc)


The volvo s60 supposedly fully brakes the car, though it famously didn't work at their press event :) it is getting there though.


Someday computer control will be advanced enough to take over. Most planes, our cars are all already fly by wire and no one even noticed. Even race cars are now. Traction control is already the computer taking over for you when you think you are in control, and it has been proven far better than human control. It's going to happen, and we will all be much safer.

I know it makes more sense for car drivers to install it, but the vast majority wont, unless it's required by law. Then you have the question of how will they regulate it. Even though people are required to drive insured, many still do not and so cyclists may have more of an incentive to use something like this.

As the car approaches, the sensor should pick up whether or not it is slowing down as it approaches you. If the car is not slowing down, and is on route to hitting you, it will emit a loud alarm.

I like it in theory, but how much does it cost? Can it run on batteries, or does it need to be hardwired to a 12 volt lead acid?

They will do it the same way they got reflectors on bikes and emission control devices on cars: mandate it through the manufacturers.

Anything else, and it's just a lot of irritating noise just before your lights go out.

Then they would hit you because they'd be confused about why their call just dropped and trying to redial.

I was thinking about something along the lines of reactive armor; 12 or more .45-110 powerheads from shark sticks mounted to the back of the bike. Upon impact, they fire, pushing the bike and rider away from the car, while simultaneously disabling the car in a rather spectacular manner. Get them popular enough, and it might have a really nice deterrent effect.
