Classic & Vintage - Peugeot Competition(?)

Hi folks,

I was a true MTB rider, but lately I look that street racing bikes around me as I slowly trailing on my MTB to the forest, and decide to buy one (semi)vintage bike to experience that joy of speed! My budget is limited so I didn’t looked on this new high tech road bikes, but old good steal. :)

I have opportunity to buy this bike on picture for ( I suppose ) reasonable amount of money. The problem is that I don’t know exactly what model of Peugeot this is. It looks to me that on TT write “Competition”. The frame looks pretty new design, and fork also – shifters are not on the frame. I know that frame is steel not alloy.

Did maybe somebody know anything about this bike model?

Mid to late 90s model I think. The cable stops up on the head tube say to me it´s later than my Competition 500 which is about a 94 I think:

There is a chap on here called Miami Jim who knows everything about Pugs so he will have a definite answer, that´s for sure.

Check the seat post isn´t seized and the integrated shifters are working.

I have more catalogs that aren't scanned. Give me a day or 2 to go through them.

FWIW, components appear to be very late 1990s versions of low mid-range Shimano, possibly RX100 or RSX.

I can tell you this, the frame is heavy for a modern creation. I have a 99 competition 60 with veloce group and columbus brain tubing, very stiff, solid, semi-aggressive.
But the thing is 26 lbs.

That weight is not a problem to me, it will be the lightest bike I ever own! :)
How are you satisfied wit bike? Is it OK for rides 80+ km? How is for climbing, beside his weight? Fork on your bike is a little bit different?

The CP 10 would be the intro level competition frame, above the "performance" models.
I bought the bike for my Significant Other to ride, A bit too small for me although I do try every now and then.
She has ridden it on a few centuries now so it certainly holds up for distance, I like the feel of the ride, (although mine is a different alloy) it feels stiff but muted, mabye a little numb.
No noticeable flex in the frame. This can make it harsh when you hammer on it but makes it very efficient for long flat rides.
A little sluggish on climbs, don't know if that's the weight, the original tires, or the drivetrain but I would say its a good descender, probably quicker than I am comfortable with.
Its also going to get some looks being from an era when cycleurope wasn't allowed to sell in the states.

Unortunately my the racing bike pages form 1999 catalog have been torn out but it is a Competition 10 which is Peugeot entry level Competition model for 1999. 1999 is is an easy year to ID as its the only year with the decal scheme pictured.

Any brifter bike (integrated brake lever/shifters) around here is worth quite a bit more than 130 Euros. This one being mid range makes it a deal! Now in Croatia, no idea on value.

I conclude from posts that Competition line is above Performace. Is that mean that Competition was used for racing? Competition CP 10 was for racing or for training? I am interesting where was manufacturer place this bike in his range.

Well, it has racing geometry but almost certainly wasn´t used by the racing teams that Peugeot was sponsoring at the time.

A few years prior the Competition was below the Professional in the Peugeot line up.

As far as this affects you, well, you can race it, train on it, commute on it, do whatever you like on it. It´s a very solid machine that with a bit of maintenance will last for many more years!

For the 1999 model year 'competition' models were above the 'performance' models. In addition ot thse thse categories Peugeot offered a 'Team Line' series which were mostly 'a la carte' or custom buit bikes but there were complete bikes as well. Team Line bike have their own catalog and you could order team replicas from Team Line catalog.

Peugeot offered 7 Competition models in 1999, the 80,70, 60, 50, 40, 20 and 10.

Competition 10" Ref no CP10V Columbus Aelle Mega tubing, ITM handlebars, Selle Itlaia Saddle, Campy mirage Ergo levers 3X9, Miche 52/42 crankset. It appears to have generic brake calipers, rims, hubs and pedals.

It the U.K. it retailed for 579.99 British pounds. In real money thats $962.

Great information in this thread. I worked at a Peugeot shop in the early 1970s and I owned a 1980 Competition for a few years, before giving it to son #1, who still has it, but I had lost track of the marque thereafter.

Your 1980 Competition has nothing but the name in common with these bikes. Yours is a 3 tube Reynolds bike that was called a PR10 in the seventies.

Just to thank you all, and let you know that I bought this bike. I go for him with car, and get back riding it for about 50km. Although the set-up was not ideal for me the ride was great, and bike felt pretty quick - around 30-45 km/h.

When I get home I try to get the seat post a little bit higher, but there was my first trouble... Seat post is aluminium and it wont get out... I suppose some kind of galvanisation has occurred. For two weeks I soak the seat post and frame with WD40 ( some kind of oil in spray ) but nothing. These days I will try to heat seat tube with industrial dryer and get set post out.

As I am planing to sandblast the frame and put plastic coating in same white colour, I will need decal stickers.... but here is my second trouble... I cannot find anywhere set of decal stickers for Competition CP 10 ( watch the picture in first post ). Now sandblasting and everything else is waiting to solve this issue, so I can continue...

If anybody have suggestion how can I solve this issues I will be very grateful.

I haven't ever seen a set of these decals on the open market. I'm sure someone has a set in their basement from a previous dealer but good luck finding them.

there are lots of threads suggesting various methods to remove your seatpost:

-ammonia to dissolve the aluminium corrosion (ask a friendly chemist)
-heat the tube, freeze the post
-seatpost in a bench vice with the frame upside down, twist the frame (CAREFUL not to destroy the chain stays and seat stays)
-seat in a tree, turn frame (not sure if this one works)

or just cut it out.

This weekend I am planing that second option. :)

Friend of mine have some tool to freeze pipes for heating houses with water still inside, and we will try to freeze seat post, and heat seat tube, an we will see... hope it will be OK. I will let you know how it works. :thumb:
