The stars of "Castle" are going carfree for a week in alliance with the Sierra Club.

http://www.ecorazzi.com/2010/11/16/castle-stars-give-up-cars-for-seven-days/

While ABC’S hit series “CASTLE” is one of my favorite television series for its clever murder mysteries and hysterical writing — its stars are also quickly earning some green cred in my book for their recent headlines.

Back in August, Nathan Fillion and co-star Jon Huertas put electric carmaker start-up Arcimoto on the map after an enthusiastic test drive of their Pulse three-wheeled electric car (http://www.ecorazzi.com/2010/08/25/nathan-fillion-gaga-for-spaceship-like-arcimoto-pulse-electric-car/). Fillion, who stars as Richard Castle on the show, said that him and Huerta were looking for a green way to get to the studio set each morning. After he stumbled upon the Pulse, he was sold. “I found it! I found my spaceship! It’s real and I’m getting it!,” he tweeted to his more than 650,000 Twitter followers.

Fast forward a couple months, and the other two main leads on the show, Stana Katic and Seamus Dever, have hooked up with the Sierra Club to document their experiences going carless for seven days over the course of a month in Los Angeles. Produced by Katic, who plays Detective Kate Beckett on the show, the “Alternative Travel Project (http://stanakatic.com/atp)” features a series of videos showing the stars getting around LA via bike, bus, and subway.

“When you’re not caught in the bubble of your car, the city blooms,” Katic told the NY Times (http://green.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/11/15/a-castle-commute-minus-the-royal-coach/?partner=rss&emc=rss).

In partnership with the project, the Sierra Club is also sponsoring a no-car pledge effort (http://action.sierraclub.org/site/PageNavigator/11102010_Castle_NoCar_Pledge?s_src=610LSCZZ03.). “Help reduce our dependence on oil,” the site reads. “Join Stana, Seamus, and the Sierra Club — pledge to give up your car for a day and join the movement of people around the country who are trying a car-free experiment!”

If every single car driver in LA did this, it would be a very dramatic change! :)

I have a feeling this just means not going anywhere for seven out of 30 days. I don't think thats the message we want to send. I think we want to show people they can be mobile and car-free!

At least the guy has a relitively nice entry level Fuji Roubaix. I could ride that for a week.

A staycation? Sounds pretty good to me.

It's seven days. Not much, but it's a start. And because these are celebrities, there will be more exposure than if it was someone who wasn't famous. Getting the word out about going car-free or car-light can't hurt.

Stana Katic is hot. I first saw her in one of the TNT Librarian Movies "The Curse of the Judas Chalice".

It would be great if they got a celebrity female to say she's been loosing five pounds a month while riding her bicycle to work.

Or can you imagine them arriving for the Academy Awards riding a bike and wearing a nice jersey. :thumb:

Oh for Pete! ;)

'Tis not, they're planning a series of videos of their adventures (http://stanakatic.com/atp)...

that would be effective publicity, but...then everyone would want to ride carbon bikes and shave their legs. maybe if they rode a normal bike to the Academy Awards, normal people would want to ride normal bikes to normal events.

I don't know, normal people wear cycling specific clothes I think. Just like normal delivery drivers wear jump suits with their name on the pocket or repairmen wear uniform shirts.
I think more people would notice a move star in a kit and it would get more comments and interviews if they hit the red carpet in a full kit don’t you?
I might not always wear a jersey to go places like shopping on my MTB but I never even get on the bike without a Helmet and bike shoes and most often padded shorts.

Carson Daly and Conan O'Brien are both avid cyclists. They're roadies, though. Don't know how much they'd be involved in the Car Free movement.

Yeah... They are car free on camera... Off camera they go right into their SUV.... Celebrities do not mean a god damn thing to moi.

Why not riding a bike to the Academy Awards wearing their formal wear? Far more effective I think to show that you don't need special clothing to ride a bike.

The men might get away with it but I don't think those dresses and gowns the women wear are bike friendly. :D

It probalby wouldn't work well on the kinds of bikes you ride, but on a more practical bike, women certainly can ride in long skirts and gowns or even high heels.

I was attempting to be polite. :D Have you seen the people on the Red Carpet at the Academy Awards or Grammy’s? Can you picture a Dress as tight and as expensive as that on a Bicycle? But that would indeed bring more attention to the awards and a lot more cameras.

I know you were only indicating it was possible even if not likely. However the picture you posted looked a bit like a bike I might ride. Even if that dress the bride was wearing may have cost more than two of my bikes.

I can remember times when I was heavily car-dependant and one day without would have been a hardship. Often, that first step is the hardest--and it isn't any easier when those who have already finished the journey are mocking you!

That's good, because my prediction is that there will be no TV in 10-20 years.

I actually like this campaign by the sierra club. The idea is to get normal people to try it. If you make it sound fun and easy they may try it. If you want to get lots of people to shift their lifestyles you need to do it gradually.

Had a look at the videos. Very amusing.

The biggest laugh was that invitation at the end
"Will you join us and the rest of the global community and commit to riding your bike one day per week?"

Global community?

Ok all you Dutch people, on your bikes for one day per week.

Ha, Ha.

If I was to take this pledge I'd have to stop riding my bike 6 days of the week.

There will be something instead, probably much worse: more deibilitating and more addictive.

3D Radio?

Smallwheels

3D Radio?
There actually is 3D radio already. In order to experience it headphones must be used. It came about because of holophonic microphones. They can record sound and place it spatially in a way that makes it possible for the listener to know where the sound is originating within a 360º circle.

Two microphone inputs are placed on opposite sides of a mount that resembles a human head. This mimics the way the sound is perceived by our ears. It duplicates the tiny differences in the arrival times of the sound waves. That is how the 3D effect happens. I wish more artists would use holophonic microphones. They would at least be more useful when listening to talk shows on FM or stereo AM radio stations.

Crocodilefundy is right about such promotions taking a long time to get people accustomed to the message. One needs to start out slowly and gradually build up to becoming car free.

I was one of those people who drove to the grocery store just four blocks away. I did that most of my life. One day I just decided to walk there. Believe me, such a thought was really foreign to me. My friends father walked all the time and to me it just seemed like something a poor person would do. That guy actually walked twelve miles to work at times. Each way!

I don't remember the day or the exact circumstances that got me to walk to the store, but I learned that it didn't kill me and it was in a way enjoyable. It was faster than using the bicycle due to not needing to get the bicycle out of the garage, lock it and unlock it at the store, load it, and then put it away at home.

After that one time I was hooked on walking to the grocery store. I would still ride my motorcycle or drive the car there if I were coming from a different location. If I was starting from home, I was walking.

The encouragement from these celebrities is really a good thing even if they just get people to try it one time. That one time will make many people realize that doing so won't kill them and it just might be enjoyable. There is no real pressure when someone asks a person to just try it and see what it's like. That makes it easy for someone to accept the challenge. If they told people that they must do it or they're being selfish it would cause resistance. This gentle entreaty keeps it pleasant.

Smallwheels,

We come from a different country, a different continent and probably a different generation.

Neither of my parents ever learned to drive and both lived well into their 80's. My wife has never learned to drive and I was in my mid. 30's when I learned to drive. I remember visiting the US as a tourist before I could drive, travelling around by plane, train and Greyhound bus. When I told people "no I can't hire a car as I don't drive" they gave me strange looks. I hadn't a credit card then either and when I paid for hotels etc. in cash this also got a reaction.

For me radio has always been 3D, even 4D, as your mind adds the extra dimensions.

On the subject of the OP, my attititude is that anyone who is influnced to cycle just because a 'celebrity' advocates it probably will give it up as soon as they see another 'celebrity' driving a fancy car.

Very good point on how fickle people are about celebrity following. I can't beleve how many people went around with one glove because MJ did. I guess it would safe to say people would save on the numbers of gloves they had.

As a society we went overboard on credit cards and in the US it has hurt people badly. But the strangest thing I ever had happen to me was when I took my son to Arizona to go to school. We went to rent an apartment and the wouldn't take cash.

In Ireland it was the banks who went crazy with their credit cards and the tax payers ended up with the bill.

Count yourselves lucky.
