Where do you get bike shipping boxes and how much disassembly is required or expected when you throw an old Raleigh or Peugeot into the mail ??

I see lots of older bikes on eBay & wonder about the true cost of shipping.

Is it possible to get boxes from local bike shops ??

Yes, go to your LBS and ask for a box. They may charge you for it.

You should plan to use a lot of packing material, remove h-bars (leave cables in place but secure h-bar to the frame), remove pedals and remove front wheel (pass front wheel through crank arm and secure front wheel to frame). Use a brace to secure front wheel dropouts to prevent the fork being bent inwards. Use more packing material then insert in bike box.

Around here, bike shops are happy to give you a bike box. They cost them money to throw away, so you are helping them out. Since every bike coming to them is in a box, a large bike shop is inundated with boxes.

When I need a bike box, I always try to grab two. One is used for the shipping, and I cut up the other one for additional bracing material and whatever.
