Living Car Free - Bike path in a day

Here's a possible way to speed up the building of bike paths. Street Printing (http://bldgblog.blogspot.com/2010/11/road-printer.html)

It looks like it needs to have the route already prepared (dug up, flattened, possibly with a bottom layer in place) before the "street printer" comes through. All that digging and preparing the route is a substantial portion of the cost of putting in a road or path.

It looks to me that they are resurfacing a Dutch road after some roadwork has been done.
We still have many roads that are brick surfaced rather than tarmac.

While I could find many photos of the machine building a road block by block, I did find only one that looked like that road printer, but this site claims it to be a Dutch invention too:

In Korea the bikepaths are stupidly built into the side walks. All sidewalks are inlaid brick and made by hand. The bike paths are often blocked by mobile fruit stands and vendors or by motorcycles who ride on the sidewalk. Even better is that cars use the sidewalks for parking...

You realize of course what it would be like travelling over this kind of surface on a bike. After a year or so, it would probably resemble washboard.

Yes... yes it does! Even worse is when you are riding on the stones and one of them has a sink hole under it. It feels like the ground is falling out from under you!
