Electronics, Lighting, & Gadgets - Red AA Torch

Hi all,

Have seen the ultrafire red led torch mentioned here before, however I am an AA man myself, not a huge fan of the 18360 (or whatever they are) batteries. Are there any good bright (fenix l2d bright) torches out there with a red LED, or an easy to replace LED, that take AA batteries?

It does seem like a waste to filter a white LED, but that might be the easiest option short of finding a powerful taillight.

Filterintg a white LED greatly decreases output as relatively little red in a white LEDs output compared to an incandescent bulb. I have the Fenix red filter as well as an Olight one so have tried it. I also have a couple of red LED conversions I bought on Amazon last year for converting Maglights. Unfortunately it seems that they have been discontinued.

TerraLux, Diamond and Nite Ize used to offer various colors of drop in conversion LED modules but they seem to be discontinued so far as I can find.

Some red LED flashlights are made but with relatively low output. Look for "Astronomy Flashlight" or night vision retention flashlights. Here is a link to about the brightest currently offered that I know of. It is a 4 AAA cell light.

Probably not near as bright as my converted LED red lights but better than nothing.

Just get the ultrafire. It's very bright and works very well (I got the extra 5-mode drop in, the flashing mode is very bright).

Too bad you don't like the 18360's - or whatever they are. I am very happy with my $10 red LED flashight from Dealextreme. Insanely bright, several hour run time. Only drawback is there is no side spill. But it works fine for riding dark, rural roads where traffic only comes from the front or the back.

Hmm I guess I could be persuaded to get the ultrafire. I already have a dinotte 140R rear light and a B&M dynamo powered one. But I like lights! I will read into it a bit more.

Try 4sevens.com. Excellent variety of lights. I've got a AA Tactical mounted on my road and mountain bikes.

+1 on filters drastically cutting light output. I would think if you wanted a red light for anything more than close-up work (like reading a map) you'd want a dedicated light.
