I'm 30 with an office job, a wife and two kids (two years old and 9 months). I want to get a bmx street bike because they look fun as ****, and I wanted to ask older riders who they ride with and what sorts of places, i.e. schools on the weekends, etc. I'd feel a little out of place riding around with a crew of 18 year olds and what not.

Also, how the hell do you explain it to the wife?

My friend just got his son a little mini ripper. He put his old 20" GHP together but decided it was to small so he got a Big Ripper for him. Point is, he gets to take his family with him.

In my house its, "honey, I'm going riding"... Sounds about the same as when I said it to my mom 25 years ago....

"It's cheaper than buying a season pass at the ski resort or joining the country club."

I ride alone almost all the time. Flatland for me is solitude. Once and awhile, I'll ride with a few other friends from back in the day who still do it. Otherwise it's me, myself and I.

The wife knew about my bike habit when we met so I don't need to explain anything. It's just who I am. Flatland, road riding, commuting or just plain messing around. I'm pushing 40 and it's all good.

I'm pushing fifty (yikes!) and thinking about getting into BMX!

My wife and I bought a DK cruiser for my 19 our old son, mainly to ride back and forth to work since he didn't have his driver's license at the time. We moved to a new metro area and his job transferred him to our area.

Making a long story short, he didn't have room for his BMX in his apt. so he's keeping it with us. My neighborhood will be building a new skateboard/bike park next year so I think I will give it a whirl. And I don't have to drive there.

Hope I won't look too out of place. I have a freestyle helmet which I hope will hide all that gray hair!

Don't buy those kids any beers, they're just having you on - They're not going to show you the secret to that trick you want todo. :)

Goto an indoor skate-park and take a lesson.

Don't be shy or ashamed of your age, it only a problem if you're not confident.

Ive tried several times to get back into it im 28 but its not really my age thats been preventing it, surgeries from injuries have pretty much ended any dream of me hitting some doubles or the like, i keep a hold of a few BMX's in the hopes medical sciences can put my shoulder back together, back to pre-injury cond. But i explain my bikes to the old lady by saying its cheaper than me collecting muscle cars :)

I got my son signed up at the local bmx track, then told the wife "if he is going to do it, I am going to be out there with him".
She never needs an explanation when I exercise or take the kids off her hands for an evening.

When i take my bmx bike out i just ride solo. Usually downtown around warehouses and other places that look like they might have stuff to ride. I've tried riding with other people but they're 16-18 and even though i'm 23 i feel wierd hanging around with them. None of my old friends ride bmx anymore so my riding companion is my mp3 player..

And i just say i'm going riding for a little bit. Works 99% of the time :)
