Classic & Vintage - RetroCarbons, let's see 'em.....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hydro's make us go.
Flouro's make things blow.
Those in the know, though,
think Retro's the way to go.
Though steel is worth the peddling,
Some fool is always meddling
With designing a frame
to make them a name
That's cooler and faster when pedaling.
Enough of this nonsense, let's see the "retro" carbon bikes.
Bring out the bikes that almost always require an explanation.

1988 Centurion Dave Scott Ironman. Alloy lugs, glued-in tubing. BB says "60x63.5" but that's way off.
No Tange decals on this one. It was made in Japan, though. Came to me from Otto Rax, is now with gmouchawar.
OEM was Dura Ace, though I've never seen one with any more DA than the FD, BB, and crankset.
Centurion sold another, almost identical model, called, simply, "Carbon." It was Shimano 600 tricolor.
This is Chorus and Vento because I thought it would be cool.

BF member Spinz found me another, and BF member riva picked it up and shipped it to me.
I built it similar to my current one, so no need to post pics of it. Here is my current one.
It says "59x63" on the bottom bracket, but it matches my 56cm steel Ironman bikes in size.
This is 10-speed Ultegra, Mavic Cosmic Elites.

Here are a couple more:
Early 90's Look KG 196 and circa 1993 Trek 2300.

subscribed. very cool thread. very nice bikes.
I wish I had more than one picture of this thing. Not only so I wouldn't be posting it over and over, but so I could post one after I fixed the saddle.

save the saddle, that is one of my favorite treks. can i have the white frame in the background?
Unfortunately, Brooks Swallows don't get along with Thomson seatposts. The clasp hits the top of the post. Ask me how long it took me to figure out that particular noise.
The Cinelli's long gone. The Trek frame replaced it.

Miyata CarbonTech 3000 1991ish. Fixed gear cuz the frame had been dropped in shipping and the shifter boss had been pushed into the frame. A friend of mine who does CF work, removed the top tube cable guides, FD mount and other shifter boss and laid new CF and resin over the holes. You'd never see the patches if you didn't where to look. Has a matched set of tub wheels on it now.

great timing on this thread. I was telling someone a few weeks ago the last carbon bike I owned/rode was a '94ish Giant something. well when cleaning and moving some olde stuff around I found some photographs ( [foh-tuh-graf, -grahf] for you 'young ins, that is like a 'pic' but it is actually printed on papaer after a magical chemical process) anyway turn out it was actually a Mongoose IBOC frame. never cared for it though and I sold it off
IIRC the parts I sold it with were mostly the 105 STI you see, and a pair of Open 4 CD/ Campi Rec wheels with a Sachs FW

In years of riding, I've seen very few Mongoose roadies, much less a carbon...

had similar sitatuion with my frame - the front brake cable stop was messed up. Found some clamp on cable stops. Here is a link http://www.cambriabike.com/shopexd.asp?Item=005904000606 not sure if that will help your problem.
An Epic I recently sold...

it was the only one I ever saw. I think it was a short lived thing. this frame was actually susposed to be out of alignment but I never noticed anything wrong with it.

The removal of the cable guides and other stuff was planned. I bought it as a damaged NOS frame for the sole purpose of building it into a fixed gear. No way I was ever going to get the old shifter boss out of the down tube or a new one in. The cable guides without a cable strung through them were nothing more than scrotum snaggers anyway. :)

here's a bare frame set: 58cm ALAN Record Carbonio labeled Fanini.
It needs the DT-to-headlug joint re-bonded, and yes as a coincidence it IS for sale, and cheap.
http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w314/unworthy1_photo/ALAN%20Fanini%20Carbonio%20frameset/ALAN_1.jpg
check out the for sale postings for details.
Beautiful bikes. One of my grail bikes is the Peugeot PY10FC.
