Well, I made the mistake of almost completely dissasembling this thing to clean it. All was well until I tried to re-attach the derailleur cage to the body. The problem is the really strong spring. I've been working on this for two hours, and still no idea how I'm going to get it back in...

These two need to go together. Seems it's supposed to go like this: The big circular bit on the upper-right of the body spins around about 180' from where it is now, then pushes down about 1cm. Then that little wire coming out of the body slots into the hole in the cage, and the cage (which has threads) is locked into place by tightening an allen nut which is running through the body.

178794The problem is, when I get to this point, it invariable pops back around before I can get the thing pushed down far enough for the allen bolt to stick out so that I can thread it onto the cage.

I have no idea how to get around this. I'm sure some of you have done this before. Please tell me the trick! This is driving me nuts.

From your description, you're trying to put it back together while under tension - no need.

Ensure the grub screw is out (the pin with the screwdriver slot on the chromed collar). With the spring and pivot bolt in the body, slide the chromed collar over the end of the spring sticking out. Then take the jockey wheel cage and insert the part of the spring sticking out into one of the two holes in the mounting point of the jockey wheel cage. Tighten the allen bolt.

Then - and only then - wind the jockey wheel cage around couterclockwise until the screw hole for the grub screw is oriented just past the lower limit screw (for adjusting the derailleur throw). Screw in the grub screw.

Voila! Sorted.

The stop has a screw slot in it, unscrew the stop with a screwdriver and remove it. This allows you to put the cage back together without any spring tension. Once it is back together wind the cage counterclockwise to place tension on the spring then screw the stop back in that keeps the cages from unwinding clockwise.

The lower spring pivot bolt passes through the body and the black plastic keyed bushing which traps the spring tang. assemble that with no spring load, greased liberally inside. Next, the chrome plated collar (internally greased) goes on EXCEPT first remove the spring screw stop. This will allow you to select the hole for the spring and bolt to pass through under no load. Select, the outer cage plate and the hole you wish for the spring tang to pass through, begin to engage the bolt into the cage, don't thread all the way. Now, load the spring and install that stop screw, tighten the lower pivot and test for smooth action. Make sure that the plastic outer bushing was kept in position.

I am assuming a few things, all the parts are from ONE previously assembled unit. (there were tolerance variations) and you do not have one of the very earliest units that went together a bit differently.

I'm sure you figured it out by now, but I reattached your picture with an arrow to the stop pin you need to remove.

Oh man, i can't believe I didn't see that. Stupid, stupid... Should have known if it needed that much cranking around I was doing it wrong.

So, Uh... do you guys know where I can find a replacement spring for Campy Nuovo Record RD? I bent it out of shape, and now when I put it together properly it locks up and won't spring.
