Mountain Biking - Giant "iguana" any good??

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've been looking at some bikes lately, i'm just getting into mountain biking, and the giant iguana seems to be the most bang for the buck
$500 manitou six comp fork, mostly shimano deore components, weinmann rims, panaracer fire XC tires. that's some of the specs.
has anyone heard anything good or bad about giant bikes? or have and better suggestions. i was also looking at the Kona blast. for $525, it doesn't have as good components, but the frame may be better, i'm not sure.

Giants are generally well thought of, as are Konas. You can read about some user reviews of the Iguana here:

And reviews of the Kona Blast here:

Seems you can't go wrong with either one. The frames look pretty similar to me -- Giant's Aluxx aluminum is 6061-T6 aluminum by another name.

I have had no problems with my Giant frame. I have the Giant Ranier with Deore Components. I would probably be happier with some better components, but they work fine. Lots of good can be said about disc brakes. Just be sure it feels good to you. Mine is a few years old so I can't say much about this years models, but they are bound to be improved over my three year old bike. I ride it hard and it has held up well.
Giants are solid bikes and can often be a bit easier on the pocket book than similar bikes from other manufacturers. If it feels right, then no reason not to go with it.
