Does anyone have experience with using oversized tires on rims? I've seen the chart on sheldon's site:

http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire_sizing.html

I have an 80s univega that has an original araya 700c rim on the front (only marking is a red sticker saying Araya 700c) and a replaced weinmann rear rim (marked something like 700c 18/23 ETRTO 622-14 etc).

They have 23mm tires now that need to be replaced and I'd like to move up in size since I'm not comfortable with the really thin tires on very potholed streets.

Based on the chart, since 14 is in between, I should probably be able to do 28 without issue, but does anyone have any experience running 32s or 35s on this size rim? Using 38s would be out of the question, right?

don't get too hung on the rim width. odds are real good any tire up to about a 700x40 will fit the rim OK. more critical is the frame and fork clearance.

a x25 should fit with no problem and depending on the tire will give a noticable softer ride. if your not a speed demon try and see if x28s will fit in the frame.

I've run 700x35c's on Open Pro rims, which have a 13mm inside width. The handling got a bit weird if I let the pressure drop too far (like 35psi), but other than that no probs.

I have 700 x 40s on Sun MA14s on my hybrid. You will never damage the rim from rocks. Roger

Excellent, thanks everybody! Good reminder about the frame clearance, I'll eyeball it before I pick any new tires up. I was trying to be careful to keep the pressure in those wheels with the tiny tires to avoid wheel damage, but I'll keep it mind about the larger tires too.

Perfect timing on this thread!!! I just picked up a rear wheel in this size yesterday and that is exactly the question that was on my mind. I wanted to put 25's or 28's on the rim, so it sounds like I'll be ok.
