Touring - Florida Keys to North Florida

I would like to make this trip at the end of the semester which is some time in December or at the end of the spring semester which I believe is in May.

I was wondering if anyone has made the trip or has any advice to share. I have read a little bit about touring but I have never actually toured before so any information you guys have to offer I would greatly appreciate it.

What I am specifically looking to find out is what roads are recommended when going from South Florida (not the Keys since there is only one road that runs through them) to North Florida. Where did you camp at night. What food did you bring.

Check out ACA's Florida Connector Route and the ACA Atlantic Coast Route. I road the half of the former last year and several services were closed. I rode the latter back in '87 so any info I have is outdated. One thing I remember is that there are no real hills, i.e. an overpass seemed like a hill.

My friend and I did Lake Worth to Key West only, so I can't give any information on Northern Fl. But for Southern Fl. below Florida City is rough. There are only two roads IIRC that lead from Key Largo to Florida City, and both are two lane highways. There is a lot of construction going on and we had to walk a few miles along that stretch. Above that though, you're pretty solid. From Florida City to Miami there is a Charter bus road alongside US1 that is empty but for a bus every 30 minutes or so. After Miami it's A1A, which is pretty cyclist friendly. I've ridden A1A pretty far north on other rides, and from what I've read, it goes most of the way up the coast.
