While test riding several bents this week I came across a 2000 model RANS Rocket. Just for kicks I gave it a test ride and was pretty impressed. It's not exactly what I'm looking for but if the price was right I would consider buying it to ride until I find something better and then keep it as a spare afterwards.
Although it has been hanging on the wall of an LBS for the last 4 years gathering dust they still consider it a new bike because it has never been sold and they only offered to discount it by $150.00.
I read the the review of the 2001 Rocket on bentrideronline.com and it appears that the 2001 had a few changes that would make the newer models the better choice. However, based on my past experience with this LBS I know if I go in with a fist full of greenbacks and make them an offer they may come off of the price some more.
Right now $850.00 doesn't sound like that good of a deal to me for a 4 year old, earlier version of the Rocket with a 7 speed cassette and dried out/ cracked tires. But if the price were right I would still consider it. Based on my description above what do you all think it is really worth?

About half but the shop is probably stuck with what they paid and may be stiff headed about it. Rocket has a nice rep for the price. Sounds like a wall hanging to me.
Do them a favor and test ride to knock off the dust and get the bearings turned around a bit but pass on it. Bike would need a complete tear down and rebuild for lube purposes after 4 years. Maybe new brake pads as well as tires. Steve

Steve,
Good point about the bike needing work after sitting idle. I'm also suspicious as to why this one has not sold. Could be something wrong with it that I didn't easily spot.

As Krispy says be wary. I would also be wary.

Take it for a spin...if satisfied, insist that they provide NEW tires/tubes, lube, and tune up. Then offer them $700. If they refuse, go and buy a used 2003 or 2004 for the same price. Most bent owners keep their bikes in tip top shape, so you ought to do ok used.

A few days after my origional post I bought a new '04 Bacchetta Giro from a different LBS. They made me a really good deal on it and I've been pretty happy with it.

Good on ya. I would have walked on $850 for something with a 7 speed on it and cracked tires even though I know what needs to be done

let us know how you like the Giro, thats what I wanted but couldn't get anyone to come down at all on the price, well there was a place a couple of hundred miles from here.... so I got a v-rex here in town, have about 30 miles on it, like it lots, things learned today, not only can you sing in the rain, you can grin in the rain. spray from cars is like right on ya! I still can't ride on the white line like I can my upright. there are some muscles in my legs that the upright didn't call out, I'm thinking this bike will replace my other ones and become an all around bike, except for the foul weather communting, when I like my cape to get to work not all sweaty, and I can tilt my head down in the hard rain. and the traffic spray isn't in my face. I find it sad that my other bikes are obiviously going to be left in the shed a lot since I got this bent contraption! its funny how all the things I read about bents, didn't make sense till I start to experience them! bye, bye, from Or.
