I'm thinking about getting a 3-speed fixed gear. I was wondering if you guys had any recommendations concerning the following two options:

Felt Brougham complete bike:

Sturmey Archer wheelset:

Which do you think is a better value? How much do you think I would spend if I built a complete bike with the wheelset? I bike every day but I'm not a super serious rider, and I'm thinking $700 might be a bit out of my price range. But if it's a really solid bike that won't need a lot of maintainance then I think it might be worth it.

Unless you already have a frame you love in mind, I wouldn't go for the wheelset. You can get the Kilo S3X complete for $80 more. (http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/mercier/kilott_s3x.htm)

edit: I'm very slow with the cut and paste also.

Love it... get the wheelset if you can't afford the complete bike.

I had my Schwinn Madison's rear wheel rebuilt with a Sturmey Archer S3X hub and its like FG on steroids.

You won't regret it!

How much do the new aluminum hubs weigh? I have an old steel SA 3-speed (coaster) hub lying around that I was going to build up for my commuter but the thing weighs like 5 pounds. It's such a beast I decided to go SS/FG instead.

I bet 3-speed fixed would be pretty cool either way.

The alloy hub doesn't weigh much. Shifting is intuitive. Up is low middle is direct and low is high.
