Advocacy & Safety - NY bike lanes - NYT

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

"Outside the city, bikes have begun creeping into political battles this year. The Republican nominee for governor of Colorado, Dan Maes, wondered during the primary whether bicycles were part of a nefarious plot to ruin the nation’s cities.
"More seriously, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/f/adrian_m_fenty/index.html?inline=nyt-per), who lost his bid for re-election in Washington, found himself painted as out of touch with residents, in part because of his connection to new bike paths.
"In Canada, bikes became a campaign issue in mayoral elections this month in Toronto, where a critic of lanes prevailed, and in Winnipeg, where the incumbent was forced to defend the city’s expanding bike network.
"In New York, the biggest challenge yet could come along Prospect Park West."
The great backlash begins.
I really like the idea that bike lanes CALM the traffic. We all need to be calmer. I am now riding in Cathedral City and Rancho Mirage, and enjoy nice bike lanes (for the most part) on 50 mph streets. Even if the line isn't there the right lane is extra wide.

Awesome. I can't believe I lived and worked in that cesspool for six years.
If there are too many cars on the road, there are too many cars on the road. Even children could figure that out.

Wall Street Journal also reports on New York City bicycling: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703567304575628783384491828.html

hope this all doesn't go the way of Proposition 19.

I guess they are done laughing at us.

It's horrible to see what's going on in new york. Here is a cool well-made doc that talks about that exact subject. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18ZyA9PIQwQ

I have expected this for a while.
We-bike riders-are a tiny minority.
No one has a "right" to a road. It always comes down to votes.
Bike riders have somehow become tied to the Dems when we should have worn the flag and said we were riding to decrease funding ME and SA countries that are funding our enemies.
We are now going to be screwed by the Rep because we somehow became identified with the idea that our cities should be like European and Asian cities. Reps see that as evidence of "One world government" tendencies. .
We should wrap ourselves in the flag and play up the "not funding Iran,Ven.Saudis" by buying their oil aspect of bike riding. Health benefits-decreasing health care costs is another positive angle.
Besides,I like suburbs and I like cars- most folks in the USA like suburbs. Affluent folks whom live in nice areas(well guarded) love cities-folks who live in less nice areas have no fondness for cities.
We are going to be screwed if we don't change our emphasis or change who we allow to put forth our ideas.
