Commuting - New Job, New Commute, New Backpack!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm starting a new job in two weeks. The new job will put me on the DC Metro during rush hours, so instead of the Pocket Crusoe w/ rack and panniers, I'll be using the Tikit and a backpack. (I don't have money for a BF rack, but I did have an REI gift certificate; so no rack for a while).

So, I treated myself to a new pack, something I haven't done in 20 years or more. The current backpack is so old, it's a Chouinard pack before they became Black Diamond! I have literally been using this pack since about 1990. My wife loves to tease me: "Hon, where's that brown pack of yours?" "It's BLACK" I retort..."or well it was, 15 years ago, when it still had padding and the lining wasn't flaked off".

For my new pack I chose the REI Novara, based on good ratings (lots of them) and the features I want (obnoxious hi-vis, the right pocket sizes and placement, rain cover, price, etc). Here it is in all its Freddified glory:

Next week I will test my new route with the pack. My new route eliminates the bus portion of my multi-mode ride; or, allows me to take train and bus and skip bike if I please. Nice options to have. Can't wait!

Happy riding everyone!

My commute went from about 13 miles to about 24 miles--one way:
