Advocacy & Safety - Toronto Mayor Rob Ford's first day: cancels transit plan, stops "war on cars"

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
No real surprise here...

Doesn't sound anything like what he supposedly campaigned on. Sounds like he's cancelling an expensive light rail line and wants to build subways instead (which confuses me, as I understand it subways are very expensive).
And suddenly cyclists make his list of things to support.
Sounds to me like Toronto doesn't have much choice and has to support transit. This guy will probably be a minor bump in the road.
see, if people wanted proper cycling infrastructure, they would have voted for pantalone.
at least ford is better than some of the other candidates who would have removed them entirely.
besides, if more people use transit, that's less cars on the road.
European transit only works, because they don't have as much urban sprawl and have a proper network that connects as much as possible, unlike our rather minimalist approach.

Wow. This is actually kind of hilarious, except it is for real.

Cherry, invited by Ford to the ceremony, said he specifically chose to wear a flamboyant pink jacket.

"Well, actually I'm wearing pinko for all the pinkos out there that ride bicycles and everything," he said.

Mayor Ford looks very similar to Auric Goldfinger.

Trust me, you never had the exclusive on the rednecks in the country. We seem to have enough of our own without importing any. ;)

What else needs to be said?
Don Cherry has as much place in a policy discussion as Rob ****in' Ford.

Ford does not have the authority to unilaterally kill the Transit City plan, and doing so would be so expensive and ruinous that I have a hard time imagining that Council would ever approve such a bone-headed move.

Ford wants to kill off streetcars and build subways instead. So he'd have to pay termination liability for canceling the streetcar order, then try and get the province to pay for more expensive and long term subway construction which wouldn't complete until after he was out of office if he could get funding and approval from council. So he wants his legacy to be gridlock and traffic jams?
rail should be underground in the downtown area, it's much more bike friendly than surface rail

Both Ford and Cherry are gasbags. Both overdue for heart attacks.

personally, I don't mind the change in plan for more subways.
It's just the sticker shock one would have to get over.

Well, I hope rob ford will keep his promise of not removing any bike infrastructure.
It sucks as it is.
