I've got an older Fulcrum 5 wheelset with a Campy freehub installed. The wheelset is perfect, and I'd like to use it for a Shimano bike.

As per the tech docs on the Fulcrum website, the shimano freehub body for the 2005-2008 fulcrum 5's is a part number R5-015.

The shimano version freehub changed for the 2009-present to an R5-020 freehub, which is the same as a Campy part #WH-KX9.

This newer freehub body is available and priced very nicely at probikekit, and I'd love to pick one up to install...I'm just looking for some confirmation that it's going to be backwards compatible with the earlier model ('05-'08) Fulcrum 5's.

I'd appreciate any information you guys have on this particular issue. I understand that it might be a long shot, but amazing things have happened around here, so I thought I'd give it a try. :thumb: Thanks.

Hi Jeremy

Looking at the Fulcrum tech doc's would say that these are not combatable.

As you have found, the Pre-Evo (before 2008) hubs used the R5-015/019 and these could be swapped between the 5's and 7's (have done this)

The Evo's (2008-2010) and 2011 Racing 5's use the R5-020 freehub.

You could try contacting your countries distributor, or on the Fulcrum's site, there is a contact form for asking questions.

Another possibility is to retain the current freehub and Campy cassette and make it work with the Shimano brifters and rear derailleur via a suitable J-tek Shiftmate model. (www.jtekengineering.com).

I've gone the other way and used Shiftmates to let me use Campy 10-speed brifters with, first, a Shimano 9-speed and later a 10-speed cassette and rear derailleur and they have worked wonderfully.

Hey guys,

Thank you for your replies.

I actually ended up receiving some email feedback from the fulcrum wheels tech support folks, and they confirmed that the R5-020 freehub body IS compatible with the older Fulcrum 5 wheelsets. Great news for me, and it looks we'll be able to put this set into use afterall.
