Road Cycling - Entry Level Road Bikes by Tour magazine

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This may not be of too much use to the stateside people, but I thought I would enter it just as a guide. The great German magazine Tour has been doing monthly comparisons of several bikes each month in price ranges. This month was entry level bikes.

All are road bikes, and many are probably not available in the USA or Canada (but some are). But the idea was to show what kind of stuff is available. They rate each bike by a complex method which includes parts, finish, and ride/handling characteristics. In all there are nine categories.

I have listed the bike make and model, gruppo (which could be a "mostly", as sometimes they are mixed - second name is usually brakes), wheels, price (in Euros, which is about .9 dollars US these days - all are under 1000 Eur), and rating (they are in rating order from highest to lowest - 90 is highest possible).

Make and Model Gruppo(s) Wheels Price Rating
Jan Ullrich Vuelta Veloce/Mirage Mavic CXP23 999 67
Cube Peloton 105/Tiagra Rigida Nova 999 66
Stevens San Remo Tiagra Mavic CXP21 999 64
Decathlon R-Serie 7.4 105/Tektro Rigida Nova 971 63
Olmo Rigel Xenon Ambrosio 995 61
Wilier Escape Xenon DRC 979 61
Moser M73 Xenon Ambrosio 929 61
Specialized Allez A1 Sora/Promax Alex DA22 950 60
Corratec Racetech Four Tiagra DRC 999 57
Scott Expert Sora/Tektro Scott 900 56
Fuji Newest Tiagra Alex DA22 999 56
Felt Eighty Five Sora/Tektro Alex AT450 899 55
Wheeler 4100 Sora/Tektro Alex DA22 899 54
Merida Extreme 901 Sora/Promax Alex DA22 759 53
Peugeot PUL 503 A Xenon/Promax Rigida Nova 759 53

Hope this is somewhat useful to new road bike seekers. Please ask if you want more details on any particular bike.

Cheers...Gary

P.S. How can one make a readable table? Tabs and multiple spaces don't seem to work, and HTML is not allowed.:(

Went on scambay for Italy and France just to see what they had in the cycling area. Decathlon seems to be a popular brand.
