Northern California - Anybody up for some pirate pothole patching on Diablo South Gate?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Has anyone else sacrificed a rim coming down Mt Diablo southgate?

Here is my idea. After closing one night, we throw a pothole patching party.
Everyone bring one bag of EZ street and adopt a pothole.

I figure with just a couple people we could create a safe path down from the gate to the hole in the wall.

Who has jurisdiction on that road?
If Homeowner Association, it might be possible to organize a community action, they pay for the material, the cyclists do the work. Win-win for all.

I am not advising you to do it, but..

If you do it, one might be advised to consider doing it under a Rustler's moon.
Look for a weeknight with clear skies and when the waning moon does not rise until around 1:00 am. This way the good citizens will be sleeping. A waning moon at around 50% of full, will give enough light to see by, but not enough for you to be seen at a distance.
Not that I have any experience with such skulduggery ;)

Sounds like a good idea. Keep a lookout for a pothole patch with the jolly roger pained on it ;)

Careful, guys. That road is patrolled by the CoCo Sheriffs. They can be a surly bunch.

I remember a while back (maybe a year or 2 ago) I was chatting with a State Park ranger at the junction about the condition of that section of road and I seem to remember he said it was the responsibility of the local residents, but they were opposed to doing anything to repair the pavement for 2 reasons:

1. The horrible pavement keeps traffic speeds down and they don't want speeders blowing through their neighborhood.

2. If they did ANYTHING to repair that section, they would have to comply with regulations to adhere to established road engineering standards such as grading, drainage, etc., and that might mean widening the road as well as a significant monetary bottom line.

Can they be found liable in case somebody breaks his collarbone because of failure to maintain a public access road safe?

Call me crazy or call me stupid. But I kinda like all those pot holes. Like a good mogul run off the top of chair 10, I look at them as sort of a personal challenge. Never had a problem. I'd leave them alone. Besides, I like finding the things left behind from others (bottles, odometers, garmins, etc..).

Now watch, I've probably gone and jinxed myself.

Jeez, guys. Just go though the hole in the wall, and leave the crappy stretch to the clueless amateurs. :)

I do go through hole in the wall. There are still some nasty potholes between hole and the wall and southgate. My idea is to create a clean path on the downhill side.
My personal motivation is that my wife broke a rib on one of those potholes as we were about to pop through hole in the wall.

There is an article floating around somewhere that for the state park service to take over maintenance of the road that the road would have to be widened. This would cut into peoples property lines by 4 feet or so.
This will become a gravel road before people give up their personal property.
