I'm doing an end-of-season service on my bike and noticed that the rear hub has play, not up and down but kind of a wobble play. I take it that it should not have any play?

Is it a QR hub? Are you feeling the play with the wheel off the bike? If so, that's correct. The play is there to compensate for the compression of the axle by the QR skewer.
Install the wheel into the bike and clamp down the QR. Is there any play at the rim when rocking laterally between the brake pads?
