While driving my service van at work the other day, I was thinking about how well the engine has performed for over 215,000 miles in the last eight years I've driven it. Sure, I've overloaded the chassis many a time with the tools and materials of my trade, but I've always been careful not to dog the motor and have been rewarded with many years of trouble free service.

Then, as I often do, I began to relate this idea to cycling, and the concept of my body as the bikes "engine" gave way to the thoery that pushing your "engine" regularly, but always using discretion not to dog it too much, will lead to many years of enjoyable cycling.
