Bicycle Mechanics - Any wheel building courses in SW London, UK?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My husband is a keen competent amateur bike mecahnic, but doesn't know how to build wheels and I know he'd like to. Anyone know any courses in SW London or the South East of the UK that I could buy him for Christmas?

I would try e-mailing or calling
Roger Musson, whom I have
never met, but who seems to
know a great deal on the subject
and also lives much closer to
you than I:

And may I add that given the
nature of your enquiry, you are
a real catch. :thumb:
Respectfully,

Afterthought: Many of the reasonably competent
mechanics on this forum and elsewhere learned
wheel building, truing, repairing with the aid of
a book (mine was Jobst Brandt's ---The Bicycle
Wheel) together with a low end repair stand, a
set of spoke wrenches, some kind of cheap vernier
caliper, and possibly a dishing gauge. Mr. Musson
sells a downloadable e-book that is well reviewed.
Additionally, you can probably find a UK supplier
for things like these:

http://www.amazon.com/Avenir-Pro-Spoke-Wrench-Set/dp/B00165Q93A/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2B9KKXTEWT38R&colid=3IGKG90D4ORLJ
http://www.amazon.com/Sunlite-Deluxe-Wheel-Truing-Stand/dp/B000AO7GDK/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=ITDG31O1M72MJ&colid=3IGKG90D4ORLJ
http://www.amazon.com/Park-Tool-Portable-Wheel-Dishing/dp/B0006JHXRI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1291656882&sr=1-2
http://www.amazon.com/Bicycle-Wheel-3rd-Jobst-Brandt/dp/0960723668/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1291656933&sr=1-1
and the deluxe package ("A" ticket to Disneyland)
would also include:
http://www.amazon.com/Park-Tool-TM-1-Spoke-Tension/dp/B000OZDIGY/ref=pd_sim_sg_1
http://www.amazon.com/Bicycle-Research-Nipple-Driver-Standard/dp/B001GSKOOC/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1291665937&sr=1-2-fkmr1
So if you come up empty on the course, you can
still put some stuff under the tree and turn him
loose in the workshop -- where he will be out of
your way for hours and hours.:)

Your husband is indeed a lucky man.
3alarmer has given you some good leads for books and supplies but a true "hands-on" course would probably be valuable too. Since I have no idea where to send you specifically, I recommend you call or stop into one of your better local bike shops and ask if they offer such courses or can recommend someone who does. They will certainly have better local knowledge than most of us.

You might want to ask the people at 56a bikeroom (http://www.56a.org.uk/bikeworkshop.html) if they have a class or something, it is a community bike shop and they seem like the kind of people that would have a workshop or a class.

Thanks so much for the responses. I've bought my husband a book (Roger Musson's); will be buying him some of the suggested tools/stuff today; and will ask my local bike shop about courses.
Many thanks!:thumb:
