how do i strip chrome to re paint

i have a 25th annaversy mongoose mennace, all chrome i never repainted a bike before and my budget is low( 10-20$) i want to paint the frame yellow and the handle bars and fork black i have no clue what im doing so if u could help me it'd be great.

i had chromed forks and handle bars,i didnt strip them, and all i did was scratch it up with some rough (i just looked it over and i spelt ruff, im a retard) sandpaper(not too hard though) and then cleaned them off with alcohol, after that was dried up i used a white primer (krylon is pretty good) and added like 4 thin coats, then i waited a day and used black paint, like 6 thin coats, waited a day, and added krylon clear coat, a couple of thin coats of that, and its pretty tough. a few tips, dont paint in the sun, where its dusty or windy or both, make sure you dont get fingerprints or grease on the bike, after your done painting, let it sit for a week indoors, not in the sun, it dulls the color, and if i forgot something tell me, but i dont think you have to strip the chrome....

Typically chrome is removed by sandblasting - if you know someone with a sandblaster, then that is the way to do it. But, the way listed above works fairly well if all you are doing is spray painting.

Chrome is a seriously durable finish. You would be nuts to paint over chrome-plating. The only negative is chrome is heavier than paint, but it's lighter than chrome w paint on top!

chrome is a pain to get rid of, but yeah sandblasting is the best way. I don't know about the scratching theory though. When u go to repaint it, the frame will require a lot of preping and priming.

its not like your really going to scratch the sh*t out of it, just a bit to make the smoothe surface a little more tackyish, i think......
