Fifty Plus (50+) - Can I stop myself?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So a good friend Metric Man was bit by the N+1 bug and called me to let me know of a great deal on another bike. I wasn’t real interested but he did get the wheels turning in my head and I woke up this morning thinking about my stable. I have CF road bike for club rides that I like. I have an Aluminum road bike for weekend coffee shop rides that I more or less put together myself. It doubles as my wet weather road bike. I have an older Steel MTB that I just put new forks and chain ring on that works pretty well for what I use it for. So I asked myself do I want a CX bike, a TT bike, a full suspension MTB or what? Then a voice came to me from out of the darkness that sounded a lot like James Earl Jones,”Bob, you need to look at a Recumbent.” No I said I must be receiving someone else’s message on the N+1 party line.
I rationalized that my wife would no way support such an idea. So when I asked what she thought she asked, do they make then adjustable enough so I could ride it? “What about one of those Recumbent Trikes?” she says. As I sat down to type this I thought I heard James Earl Jones chuckling in the back ground.
Can you be infected by phone with N+1? Does the infection spread to wives? :twitchy:

I'd say that if you can be infected by posts on this site, then surely a phone call is more infectious!

Then I can in all good conscience blame Metric man? That works for me.

Might as well--he's probably used to it.

Ahh yes, I was never good at names.. but then when feverish with N+1 infection I might not be thinking clearly. Yes it is Metric Man's fault.
The bad news is that there is no hand sanitizer or disinfectant spray that will work.

Not sure about phones but I do think N+1 photons last on computer keyboards or screens and can be picked up by the unknowing spouse. One of my riding buddies received an email from me regarding a good price on a CX bike and some images of it. Later that day Dan's wife asked him why he doesn't have a cyclo cross bike that he could ride with the other guys in the snow.

Perhaps it's just rampant political correctness, but I personally never considered the voice of James Earl Ray to be much of an inspiration! As to N+1 disease, it is building, not buying, that afflicts me. I do all too often hear a deep and resonating James Earl Jones-like voice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hU3a1PDtTYk&feature=related) saying something like "If you build it, fun will come. Oh yes... fun will come. It is money you have and peace you lack. It will be as if you dipped yourself in magic waters!"

Maybe it was Lawrence Fishburne saying "Wake Up Neo."

No darn it, all I get from him is a smile as he passes me on a hill. I may wait till this weekend and run over his foot when we take the MTBs out. He should have known not to call and infect a friend.

:roflmao2: I feel as though my good name has been besmirched.
And now that you know that I actually did an incredible N+2 in one day all bets are off as to what I could be blamed for!
Hmmm, I think the actual equation was N-2+2 for me. Trade in a alum Motobecane and Rockhopper for a new Specialized 29er and a new Motobecane CX delivered to my door the same day...no wonder I haven't been on this forum in a while! :innocent::lol:

Wives can be infected with the biking bug, so why not the n+1 bug too? Get her a nice Catrike and maybe you can sneak a ride or two on it when she's not looking. If it works out, you can consider taking the next step.

I only have one problem with two cat trikes or two recumbent trikes. Moving them for out of town rides. I can get a trike in my Tahoe and two road bike plus two MTBs on the rack. I would need a trailer for two trikes.
Still she has agreed to take a look with me after the first of the year so who knows?

Not a chance. You were obviously infected and contacted a perfectly happy cycling friend that was down to 3 bikes and a Hybrid for my wife.
I took a nap when I got home by the way, will have to clean the MTB tomorrow afternoon.

If you are only down to 3 bikes- then Minuteman has done you a favour.
And the wifes hybrid is standing at "N".
Suggest you start collecting the catalogues or start looking what is availbale online. Pinarrello do some very nice bikes.

I'm thinking that you havn't test ridden one of those recumbent trikes yet. It's like riding a self-powered go cart. I've never seen anybody riding one for the first time who wasn't wearing an utterly stupid ear-to-ear grin.
Now that you've reached the stage of posting about it on BF it's pretty much game over for you - you're doomed. The easiest path is to go with it. Incidentally, my wife LOVES hers.

Funny thing is after riding with Metric man Saturday morning I had to admit he got a nice looking bike in his new 29er. So after I took my wife out to lunch we did some last minute shopping and on the way home saw a guy on a Tandem recumbent trike. She said, “Now that is more like it, I could sit in the back and let you do all the pedaling.” I told her, no, that isn’t how it works.

No, I think it was longer and looked better made.:D
You know from everything I have read it is more likely that a Recumbent would be more profitable than a smart car? I think MB is still losing money on the things.
