Well, after a couple of near misses (due to time constraints, not lack of will) of 46-47 miles I finally had a chance to get over 50 yesterday. It was a beautiful day, and I was pumped. When a group ride ended at 38 I turned around and went back out for another 15. Still pumped I was pounding up hills, into the wind at 18-20. After I hit 50 I eased up and enjoyed the "victory lap" home.

I did a camping trip with a few clubmates for rides in the country. We weren't touring, just camped at a state park in Mississippi. The weather was perfect, and the dogwoods, wild azaleas and wild wysteria were in full bloom. What a show! We planned to ride this morning, but there was a chance of rain so we packed up first. Good thing. Just as we were about to change for the ride it started thundering. We decided to call it a weekend. The rain started before we got out of the park, and by the time we got on the interstate it was raining so hard you couldn't see. I don't mind commuting in the rain and do it all the time. But it kind of takes the fun out of a casual group ride. I had hoped for more miles, but got 42 and 52 anyway.
Regards,
Raymond

I'm also going for a 50 miler today, last summer I rode about 50 miles one day also but it was in two parts, so this is going to be my longest ride ever :)

Saturday was a wonderful day for me . I got up , did the laundry and hit the road . Did 42 delightful miles ( good for me ) feeling strong enough to do more . Took a shower and went to the Yankees v Phillies game , the last of the Spring training games .
What a GREAT day !

In the interest of full disclosure it occurred to me that I should mention that we took an unplanned half-hour or so "feed" break at a convenience store when we accidentally met up with another group of our riders who were doing an entirely different route. Still, it was the first time I've done over 50 in one day. Maybe eating two slices of pizza replenished my glycogen explaining why I felt so good later. Anyway that's my story and I'm stickin' to it! I've never eaten during a ride before.

Organized centuries, metrics, and half centuries usually have rest stops (food and pit stop) every 8-15 miles so that's ok. ;)

As they say in Alabama (and some parts of Georgia), "Ya done good."

Congratulations on your first 50.

Good for you!! :D

resting isn't anything to be ashamed of... a person has to eat sometime right ;)

Thanks, Richard. The only regret was that I didn't have a dram of Talisker with which to celebrate the occasion! :D
