I’ve wanted to add low-cost C & V mountain bike to my modest collection, and just picked up this Schwinn Impact…looks to be a 1988. Looks like it’s a pretty decent model, cromolly frame, Suntour Accushift components...it's a little beat up...but I want a beater for a bad weather around town bike. The frame is TIG welded, not lugged, which is a dissapointment....does anyone have one of these in their stable?
Looks like you need to run your brake yoke over top of your front reflector. The current set up can't be good for consistent braking....
That said, I've a later Schwinn Moab Chromoly frame from my youth and an early 90's Specialized Stumpjumper comp. Neither of them are lugged, and I can't say I find it disappointing at all. They ride just fine as yours will.

It'll be a great winter beater bike. The shop I worked at sold a lot of those. They are solid if unexciting.
Always thought that was a funny name for a bike.

I almost bought one of these a couple months ago in "black chrome". it was a giant sized frame and had a nice ride but the bottom bracket was loose and needed new tires. the online schwinn catalogs seem to be missing the years that it was offered.
here is a pic of the one i looked at
Now that is a sweet looking color, and actually in my size range. That'd make a nice cruising bike if i had the terrain to cruise on...

That black chrome is great looking...I saw in some catalogs that the Impact was offered in that color for several years...the pics on the CL ad were kind of fuzzy...I was hoping for black chrome...but...can't have everything I suppose.....:)
I had one earlier this year, moved on to another home. I think mine was a 1994. Originally bought it (and used it) as a donor, then I ended up rebuilding it with another donor. So not many of the parts are original.
+1 Solid, basic recreational rider.
