Although, it does have that too.

I'm considering a Trek X Caliber 29er (http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/mountain_hardtail/fisher_29er/xcaliber/) or a Specialized Stumpjumper 29 (http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/SBCProduct.jsp?spid=52834&scid=1000&scname=Mountain). I have a connection and can get a good deal ob both. Probably a better deal on the Specialized, although it has a higher price point to start with.

I've ridden both and like both, but I am going to rent each of them to really get a better idea.

Any thoughts on the two would be appreciated, though.

The bigger question is the sizing. I'm 5'11 and fit a 19 inch in both, but there is very little clearance. The 17.5 Trek felt great, the 17.5 Specialized was a little cramped, but could be fixed by moving the saddle back just a bit.

My question is this. Is there a thought process is mountain bike sizing? Is it common to go a little small to have a more nimble bike? I'm a little concerned about having only an inch of clearance on the bigger 19 inchers.

This will be my first mountain bike. I've ridden 6k miles on the a bike this year, but it's all been road riding. One thing I have learned in my brief mountain biking experiences this year: You really work for the miles!

Someone told me when you switch to mountain biking, you stop thinking about miles and start thinking about hours in the saddle.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

comfort, it's all about comfort. whichever bicycle is the most comfortable to you is the one you want. they both have different geometry, the same size frame will feel different to you, so try them out and see which one you like best. i could never feel comfortable on a specialized, even though they are great bikes, i've never and will never own one, strictly because i'm not comfortable on them. comfort is all that matters, parts can be bought and replaced.

too small isn't good, you lose power and efficiency in pedaling. too large is no good either. from what you have written, it sounds like the 17.5 trek is the bike you should buy. buy it. trek makes great bikes.

Thanks pablosnazzy!

I think I am going to rent them both and see which one just feels right. Thanks again.
