I have what I believe to be a pretty good deal on a Kona Jake set up. I have always wanted to see what the whole cyclocross things is about. It just seems to make sense. My question is whether you can hop curbs on one of these things repeatedly without screwing up your wheels. On my MTB, I bomb everything, but I would never do any of that with my roadie. Thanks in advance...

It appears to be kind of a Franken-Bike for $550...Any comments folks, this is the description...
"56cm 2004 Kona Jake Cyclocross/Commuter/Touring frame built up with Shimano Ultegra and XT. Ultegra STI shifters, Cranks, Wheels, XT Deraillers, Specialized Body Geometry handlebars. The frame has been lightly used as a commuter and the components are off of my road bike and have around 1500 miles on them. Chain is the same age as the frame, basically new.
Great bike but too big for me - this will fit you well if you ride a 58cm road bike."

Sure, as long as you don't slam your wheels INTO the curbs.

When my Cannondale SS road bike was still functioning(some idiot on campus hit and bent the rear rim) I was able to bunnyhop onto regular curbs and rear wheel drop-off 2x to 2.5x curbs. R.Wheel was 28H 600 laced to an Open 4, handbuilt by a mechanic buddy.
Mr. Ardvark is right, as long as you do a clean bunnyhop(as you should on a MTB as well) then your wheels will be fine.

BTW, I saw a local bike messenger do rear-wheel hops (trials style) and endo slides on a ROAD bike. I think it was a 7spd w/flatbar setup.

That's gross. lol! I have been flying off curbs and the like; I have Cyclocross specific wheels, Sun Cycl-O-Crosses. They have held up perfectly fine. :)

I am using good old platform pedals & wheelie the front onto the sidewalk & slam the back into the the curb. After 2 full years of doing this, the back wheel needed to be retensioned as I had a loose spoke. Beyond that, all is well. Mind you , I am not doing this at any speed.
My last race in Mirabel, QC, there was this half burried drainage pipe that everyone, except me of course, bunny hopped over it. I did the back wheel slamming thing & the wheel is still true!
Have fun with it!
