I want to try cyclocross. Never done any racing before, I'm basically a commuter with some very short tours, really nothing competitive.

I have a 2002 Jamis Aurora that I can use as a cross bike, I know its not perfect but some cross tires on it should get me started.

My problem now is I can't find any races local to me in new jersey. Take into account I am a complete newbie at this so a very introductory level would be great. I also don't imbarases easily so finish dead last five laps behind won't bother me all that much. So any sugestions where to look for races?

And what would be some good intro training. I was thinking just riding my bike as fast as I can practicing sprints and such. Also throw in some running. Go to a field somewhere and practice those speedy dismounts (looks like it's going to be painful and fun at the same time)

Thanks for all the help.

I know exactly how you feel & under similar riding styles too, local commuter who wanted to be a little more adventurous. I lucked into a "local race" about 1hr drive from home last year & what a roller coaster ride it was. I think I was down 2 laps before I DNFed that one, pulled a muscle & couldn't hack the run up anymore. Will be attending the same venue this weekend, an anniversary of sorts, I suppose.

Here are 2 nice sites which were pointed out to me recently that you may want to look at.

I am kind of surprised that there are no local races in NJ. Try these

Just go in with an open mind & enjoy the experience, perhaps you might get hooked like me.

Good Luck!

Get yourself a copy of the bible: Cyclocross, by Simon Burney. All you need to know is in there. :)
If you are prepared to drive a little bit, New England has a great 'cross scene!
