I know they are bicycle computers primarily but they are advertised as more.

Garmin advertises that the 705 and 800 with City Maps can navigate to most anywhere in North America by address, city, desired service, etc. Certainly a handly feature for the traveling cyclist to be able to use the bike computer for car navigation.

What has been your experience? How satisfied are you with this feature?

I had the 705 and now the 800. Both have worked just fine for in car navigation. Keep in mind it does not talk to you like a made for car unit, it just beeps. Also, the screen is not very big.

In order f preference for auto navigation.

Dedicated automobile navigation unit
Smartphone
Bicycle GPS

I also find the automobile navigation unit unsuitable for walking. I think the Garmin Edge 705 or 800 would be a much better choice for navigating city streets on foot. My Garmin Nuvi has a very short battery life relative to the Edge 800.

I understand the preference for a dedicated unit with its' larger screen. But with similar screen sizes why would pick a smartphone over the 705/800?

My smartphone gives audible directions...

ie "Turn right on Deer Valley Rd in 1/2 mile"

This is better than the 800's beep.

Smartphones are better for navigation. My smartphone has a larger and better display than my Edge 800.
