I've been playing a lot of ESPN NFL 2k5. I also spend my time off the bike playing Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow. What are your favorites?

they're outdated, sort of... Asherons Call, Dark Age of Camelot, and Anarchy Online.
I hear World of Warcraft is gonna be good. Think it's in open beta.

Waiting for Grand Theft Auto-San Andreas to come out. They claim over a 100 hours to finish the game using the guide. Right now TimeSplittersII and Granturismo.

I wanted to get my nephew a game for his PC as a birthday present. His birthday is December 11, so usually he gets some kind of "combination present" for Christmas and his birthday. This is kind finky if you ask me.
Last year I got him a copy of WarCraft, a boxed set with a strategy manual and a handheld controller. This year he requested another PC game, according to my SIL.
My brother is less tolerant of violent games and games with sexual content than I am so the games have to be rated for teens (he is 15) if they are rated at all. I think my brother has forgotten all the real not virtual sex and drug related behavior that we both engaged in at that age.
Since I know next to nothing about PC games, I thought I might ask you all for help. What is a good software title or hardware upgrade for a present. The budget is about $100 and I would like to get him something a bit unusual or not commonly available.
thanks
Dan

I love the Monkey Island series (I'm hoping that there will be a 5th one)
Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacle (I want a 3rd one in that)
Grim Fandango was great too. (I wouldn't mind a sequel)
The longest Journey was great. (And Im hoping the 2nd one will be great too)
And not to mention Elder Scrolls 3 :)
Unfortunately its still a long wait for part 4.
Tahts about it.

Hardware upgrade? DVD Burner, Set of nice speakers, logitech momo (wheel), saitek x-45 (flight controller)....
It's probably best to stick with mainstream stuff for games. Could get him half life 2.
I recently got Burnout-3 on the PS2. What a hoot.
Best massively multiplayer game ever: Subspace (http://beginners.subspace.net) - like asteroids except you blow each other up.
Seriously, check it out. I've been playing it off and on since 1996. It's great because you can pick it up and play it for 5 minutes - no serious commitment - and it's FREE.
Best game of all time though? Either Star Control 2 or the System Shock series.
Not much of a gamer, but I had a lot of fun with Medal of Honor.
Mario Karts on the Gamecube is a lot of fun also.

It's still in closed beta, but an open beta announcement is supposed to be coming soon according to blizzared's website. I've played UO, Camelot, AC2 and SWG. I'll be getting WoW when it goes retail.
As for 'regular' games: Warcraft III, Starwars: Battlefront, Battlefield 1942, Wolfenstein: ET.
I only play GTA. Even bought the ps2 so i can play the I, II, vice city and now cant wait till my order of San Andreas arrives. On PC i play Flashpoint.
I play way too much Day of Defeat and Cycling Manager 4.

Dod is the only game I play anymore. Besides the odd doom II coop or halo with my friends.

I play need for speed undergound, Everquest (I'm a guildleader), and various first person shooters (everything from CS to america's army, to doom3).
My passion is racing games though, and I hold the record for drift on a 280 nissan of 19,000pts for a single drift on NFS:UG. If you ever see me online, you'll know...last time i was on, my tiburon was right on a skyline's butt for the entire 3 laps. Now that my car is a lot faster....driver beware :D
I'm currently awaiting the release of Ace Combat 5. I really enjoyed AC4 even though I'm usually more a die-hard fan of true sims. However, the AC series have somehow managed to combine decent simulation with good gameplay. While it gives up some realism, it's fun enough to not be annoying. I need to invest in a decent flight stick for my PS2 though as I think console controllers generally suck.

1 - Civilization - the best game ever!!!
2 - Commander Keen - fun, funny, and clever
3 - Day of Defeat - intense, fast-paced, always challenging
4 - Half Life - great interactivity, great storyline
5 - Halo - awesome storyline
6 - Counterstrike - somehow never gets old
7 - Starcraft - easy to get into, but still challenging
8 - Homeworld - unique spin in a strategy game...3-D movement
I really wanted to try the Total War series, but my video card couldn't handle the demo for Medieval. I'll have to hold off on Half Life 2 until I can afford an upgrade, as well. I didn't even bother finishing Medal of Honor. It felt like a Jerry Bruckheimer movie.

All this Halo 2 madnesssssssssssssss aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrhhhhhhhh!!!!!! i'm sick of it, i'm not a fan of the 'halo' series. In fact i got blocked a few times on chat when talking to Halo gamers. I have a Ps2, luckly i didn't buy Medal of Honour Rising sun when it came out other wise i would have wanted my $110AU back!!! I finished it in 2 days (no i didn't play strait, no i'm not a nerd, yes i was too easy). I still havn't finished Frontline yet.
Medal of Honour and Counter-Strike are good. GT3 and some Ps1 Need for speed are good aswell.

You can now get a radeon 9800pro 128mb for about $150 online now. Not a bad way to get into the DX9 games.
If you need a motherboard and cpu upgrade, and athlon XP 2500+ combo can be had for about $125 with a good motherboard...add in about $70 for 512mb of good ram (or a gig if the shop is having a special), and for a tops of $350, you can have a very nice upgrade.
..basically all i ever do is upgrade, I just try to upgrade while my old hardware is still worth something so I can sell it off to offset my costs a bit. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt...got $70 off my radeon 9800pro when it was $400 that way :)

Counter-Strike is the best game ever. And now with Counter-Strike: Source, it doesn't even look like its 6 years old anymore!

Hey catatonic, I know it's not much to do some decent upgrades, but even $350 doesn't come very quickly when you spend most of your time studying and the rest of the time writing checks to the school. If I do upgrade, it will have to include the motherboard, since I have a 1st generation p4 and can only use Rambus (I got Beta-Maxed hard on that one). I think maybe after graduation and when I have a job, I'll do some research, start over with a good and upgradeable system, and turn this box into a fileserver. I can still enjoy the old games in the meantime and it will be better for my grades not to have too many distractions.
Where are your prices from? I don't think I've seen stuff on newegg for quite that cheap yet.

I usually go by the fry's specials, krex.com (although their prices arent all that good anymore), and directron.com. Each place has their strong suits, and their weaknesses.
I know for some 350 is hard to get...i remeber when getting a floppy drive was hell...I ended up dumpster diving one of the corporations in the city I lived in back then to find a decent 3.5" floppy drive...I just did not have cash. Either way, i was just showing it isnt too painful to get up there.

Just rented San Andreas. It's pretty cool. Sometimes I just stop the game and listen to the radio stations. My favorite games I've played on PS2 are Ratchet and Clank:2 and Final Fantasy X.

Metal Gear Solid (PS)
Super Mario Brothers (SNES)
Silent Hill (PS)
Final Fantasy VIII (PS) [Yes, I like VIII the best...got a problem?]
KLAX (Commodore 64/NES/Turbograffix-16/etc)
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Libery (PS2)
Final Fantasy Tactics (PS)
Command and Conquer (PC) [All of them up to and including Tiberian Sun.]
Those are games that come to mind when I think of favourites. Honourable mentions go to Silent Hill 2, Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, Xenogears/Xenosaga, etc.

Man, there's people who stilll play the first one! It shows the quality of the series that it has such a loyal fan base. I think viii might have a sequel coming out for PS2, if it's the one with Vincent Valentine.

I spent December 2004 replaying Final Fantasy VII. It felt very nostalgic (first played it in 1997).
I even beat all the Weapons (remember Emerald/Underwater weapon?)

I always found VII very overrated. VIII has always, and will always, be my favourite.
