Cyclocross - is wanting a fifth bike ridiculous?

I started as a road rider then a road racer and this year a cyclocross racer and I love it all.

I have a standard road bike, SS/fixie road bike (commuter/critical mass ect.), Full suspension MTN bike, standard cross bike, and now I am wanting a SS cross bike. During cross season I convert my geared cross to a SS between races to race twice. Is it bad to want a fifth bike now? Let me add that right now I use all of my bikes at least once in any two week period. I love the variety and it keeps me interested in the sport. I guess if the price is right.... right?

There is nothing wrong with having 5 bikes. Do you think rappers are crazy that have 5 cars? If you are racing 2x per day having the SS is a good idea. It will also serve as a pit bike.

n is never so large that you don't want n+1.

To answer the OP, I have found that after three bikes it is best to rotate them. Sell one, upgrade one, but for the most part they just sit around once you label one as your favorite. It happens before we know it.

I'm right there with you at 4 bikes. I currently have 1 CX bike, 1 rigid MTB 2 x 9, 1 HT Ti MTB, and 1 24" BMX Cruiser....I'd like to add either a true road bike or maybe a 29er FS to the stable. Five is not too many IMO.

I've got two cross bikes, a winter/rain commuter, an ss/fg beater and a fully rigid MTB. I'm planning to add a sixth bike in the next year, and I can already see the need for a seventh. I think your plan sounds entirely reasonable.

I understand your hsitation, but ff you have the money, space, and use, then go for it! Bikes are such specialized machines that its hard to have them overlap (for instance, a bike that is awesome for cross, commuting, and loaded touring).

Wanting five bikes? Not crazy. I have seven. One roadie, one cross, one ss, one 29er, three bmx'rs (which I may sell two..or not). Now I'm looking to drop some coin on a carbon roadie. I ride all of them. Go for it. You only live once.

Not at all. I have 6 road bikes - all different in handling and personality. Also touring, hybrid, mountain and cyclecross bikes - again, all different from each other and used for different situations and types of riding. This all adds up to a grand total of 14 bikes.

There is always enough money to do the things you love.

I have 4 now. Cross/commuter, vintage schwinn rando, tandem tour, road race. I want to get a TT bike in the next few years as well. The Mrs. has two and son 1. Plus one for sale.

This is one of my New Years resolutions. I'm not buying (or bringing home) another bike this year. I'm up to 13 and I think I can just ride them for a year. But I'm sure there will be upgrades of parts and stuff.

OP: I have 2, a HT MTB, a Roadie and am about to get a Specialized Tricross. Also have my eye on a new 29er. That'll take me to 4. The way I see it, I'll have an extra of each for when friends come to town or when I break something (as I'm prone to doing). I think 5 is a good number, if you have the $$ then make it 6 :-) My wife has 2 that she doesn't ride as often as I do so I'm sure there's a modification to 'n+1' to account for the variable of her collection, maybe n+1(wb) where wb= wife's bikes.

But 13 is an unlucky number... you need one more to make an even 14.. (I've been accused of being an enabler.. not true, is it?)
