Anyone else find this picture aggravating to cyclists everywhere?

No.

It looks like he did the right thing- he got a phone call, was parked on the side of the road with his helmet off, one foot on the ground, not moving and talking.

Most cyclists would be ignorant enough to NOT stop and try to ride while talking on their cell phone. I've seen it. I even almost got into a crash with another cyclist because they wouldn't get off the phone.

I'm actually thinking that he's setting an example for all the stupid cyclists out there who won't be responsible enough to pull over to the side of the road and talk if they have to take a phone call.

Yes, it does piss me off...

What a piece of crap bike. He should be ashamed to ride it.

Well, if he wore his helmet he would get helmet hair! Besides if he crashed he would really want to protect that side of his handlebars. As far as the cellphone he must have got it from wonder woman's jet (insvisible?). I think he is just adjusting his glasses.

Am I the only one that sees the helmet in this picture?

Good catch on that sorry about getting that one wrong egg in my face admittedly

That's ok. But seriously, he is doing everything right. He is not riding, he's pulled over to the side, he's taken off his helmet... he's the poster boy of what cyclists should be doing if they insist on using their helmets. Unfortunately, a lot of folks insist on continuing the ride, despite all the dangers that are amplified from riding while talking.

I have no wish to be a pedant and I may be mistaken but it looks to me like he has both feet clipped in there.

I see 2 feet on pedals too.

Still doesn't really irritate me - it's his life, not mine.

I also see both of his feet clipped on the pedals, he is effectively riding and he is just answering a phone call from his campaign adviser Joe Lockhart, traveling in the one of the following official black SUVs, asking him to put his helmet on before someone get him on camera and make him lose a significant number of votes among the safety conscious cycling community

Not exactly, Koffee. He's not parked off to the side of the road with one foot on the ground.

Notice the lack of motion blur though. Yep, that's right, track stand baby! :p

no the pic does not piss me off. he obviously has a friggin helmet as it's on the handlebars and there are plenty of pics with him wearing a helmet while riding. you are making assumptions and when you assume you make an ass out of u and, well in this case you didn't make an ass out of anyone but yourself.

I'm not sure I see a cell phone either, it sort of looks like he is about to adjust his glasses, or in the middle of raising his hand to wave at the guy taking the picture. It also looks like he's in a parking lot tooling around before actualy starting his ride or something like that.

He is riding. Following are some SUV's that I am sure he doesn't own. He is using a cell phone while riding and his helmet is off; that is, he actually bought it before he decided not to use it. As for the lack of motion blur, I would have to know the speed at which the photo was taken.... 1/125th of a second can stop just about any casual rider, especially a lightweight like Kerry.

They had the video clip on the news this morning yes he is riding, and yes he is adjusting his glasses. No cell phone, can't even see it in the picture posted.

He's riding with his helmet either in his hand which is the only one on the bars or its hanging on the hood. Cellphone in his other hand and he's riding, cant park with both feet on the pedals or he's doing a hell of a trackstand,LOL.

Wow man the CIA must LOVE examining blown up documents. Looking closely, it does appear to be a shadow of his hand/glove with a streak of light on his right cheek. If his hand was holding the "phone" I think he fingers would cut across the plane of the phone in our point of view, and they do not appear to be doing so. Sure shows ya how deceiving blown up still can be. Still...why is his helmet off then?

I know what he's holding on to..its a weapon of mass destruction!

It looks like he has two black eyes from telling Theresa to stop campaigning!

Hmmm, wonder what a picture of Ralph Nader on a bike would look like.

Um, his foot is not on the ground. From the looks of it he's exiting a parking lot, not in the middle of traffic anyways.

It could be an illusion, but I might as well try... Looks like a phone, but not conclusive. I saw the video. I was disappointed, he looked to be swerving, unable to ride a straight line. Still this also could be an illusion, as he maneuvered around photographers for the photo op. I guess he put his helmet on and rode straight when he got riding for real. I don't think he needs to be seen riding. Most cyclists already know who to vote for. We need to trick the swing voters (likely devout motorists and bike haters) into thinking he's ok...

I agree with Stubacca; it doesn't bother me. It's his life. Even though I wear a helmet most of the time and I always use seat belts in my car, I have major problems with helmet Nazis and seat belt Nazis. Too many control freaks out there.

Well "trick" is the key word here. As defrined in the Oxford dictionary.

action or scheme to fool, outwit, or decieve.

It would take more than Houdini returning from the grave to "trick" myself into believing that Kerry is the choice for me.

Ai. It's a photo op; the helmet's off so everybody can tell it's John Kerry and not just another conehead like the rest of us.

:)

While we're discussing deep concerns of the day, I've noticed that none of the smileys on this biking forum wear helmets. WTF???

I think you need your eyes examined. His foot is clearly still on the pedal.

A few weeks ago I saw a news story about his many toys. He rides five custom-made bikes that he had built in New York City.

Each bike costs between $5,000 and $15,000. According to the story, he has to ride custom bikes because, at 6'4", he is too tall to ride an "ordinary" bike. (Yeah, right.)

Apparently, being married to a billionaire has its advantages.

I am not sure he needs a helmet, I bet his hair alone exceeds all applicable safety codes.

Politics aside I am 6,3" another inch taller and I would not be able to find a production bike it would have to be custom made.

... He rides five custom-made bikes that he had built in New York City. No. They were made in either Glens Falls, NY. or Saratoga Springs, NY., depending on when they were built.

Aren't there a few other people here who are of similar height? I have a friend that's around the same height and weighs 270... he rides an XL mtb comfortably. Perhaps road frames aren't as comfortable for those taller people?

Although the news story may have been incorrect... as many are, it showed one of his bikes being fabricated in a shop in NYC. Unfortunately I did not write down the name of the shop. I would have been interested in reading more about them.

Although the news story may have been incorrect... as many are, it showed one of his bikes being fabricated in a shop in NYC.Maybe they wrongly identified the location of the bike shop. I'm sure that there a quite a few folks that don't know there's anything in New York State outside of New York City.

Are you implying that a TV news reporter made a mistake? Heaven forbid!

But seriously... I'm gonna take your word for it. A serious cyclist like you is certain to know more about this issue than the average reporter. Thanks for the correction.

Thanks for the vote of confidence.

'Course it probably helps that I ride a Serotta and I used to spend my summer vacations in upstate New York just outside of Glens Falls!
