If so, i have an oddball question: can the spider be flipped over? what does that do to the chainline? (does the outer ring mount closer to the crankarm?

If you must know, i'm looking for a way to get 185mm cranks with ~160 mm q-factor, 40-27 rings and a mountain-bike-like chainline.

OH this a new crankset? I still think the answer is no. how would you flip it anyway?

I never gave much thought to the whole Q factor thing. unless you have serious back/hip problems I don't see what difference a few MM makes. also if you are being that spefic about your crank placement how do you ride different bikes?

right angle ankle knockers like TA Cyclotourist is where the Q is reduced
once you put an S bend in the arms to expand your market to bikes
with more tire clearance and frame tubes bent to match then there are different issues..

I don't think so. Flipping the spider over will put the outer chainring too close to the crankarm. There'll be no room for a front derailleur. Peter White will know for sure.

Neverthestill... the TA Carmina's will get you the lowest Q you can get.

right, the idea is to not use the "outer", just a middle and inner, for a dual chainring mountain bike setup. I'd like Q around 160mm, i can definitely feel the difference vs. the 170-175mm most mtb cranks turn out as. If I just use middle and inner rings though, the chainline would wind up too far inboard.

See the White Industries VBC cranks for the same idea but they only go up to 180, and I can't find anyone who has them in stock.

Leave the outer ring empty, and run a triple BB
[ + 4mm to get your double chainline back]
People do that all the time.

Lennard ZINN is a tall frame building guy, has long arm cranks made for his company.

Or maybe a 94 -58 BCD crank set is on ebay
