i live in minneapolis and want to ride the whole year through. been riding since last february but never through the snow, slush, wet, and dry cold of the winter. i ride on city streets, and my ride is about 20 minutes. i would tend to think that 80% of my riding will be on dry or wet pavement, but there will be snowy days and icy days. i'm not sure if i should go with studs for fear that they will wear out quickly or will be like spikes on pavement - slippery. however, as many of you know a patch of ice can send you to your hit like a lightning bolt and that ain't cool. i also don't want to even deal with changes tires. one set to do the whole trick. (oh, btw i ride a s-works stumpjumper with specialized numbus III.) any suggestions?
The Nokian w-106 is well adapted to this sort of use. The studs are carbide, and wear at about the same rate as the tires. Last winter, I had them on from December to March with zero visible wear. They are fine, if noisy, on dry pavement. They do tend to "nibble" a bit when riding om grates and metal plates. They have more drag than slicks, but no more than other knobby tires.

i was looking at those. i also spotted the Schwalbe Snow Stud. these only have studs on the outside knobs, so riding down the middle of the tire is smoother, but what baffles me is that braking down the middle of the tire won't have nearly as much grip. guess it's a toss up. smoothing, faster ride vs grip.
