okay .. so there i was this morning, happily riding to work, along with the 'posse' of people that ride at the same time, the people you know by face and bike or helmet, but you say little more than hello.

anyway, the stupidity of those 'other' cyclists who have taken to riding bikes to work in an effort to 'get fit' astounds me. Not only is it bad enough that we don't have specific biking lanes through large pedestrian areas which makes you concentrate harder (people, cars, trucks what not to look out for), these converted cyclists have taken there bad driving habits to bikes. 4 stupid riders almost hit me this morning from the side while cycling along and talking on a mobile phone .. *** ME! .. (beg the language)

we all know that its harder riding .. we give way to pedstrians, we follow road rules, we look out for other traffic .. we shouldn't have to deal with dumb riders.

Eventually, natural selection will sort them out one way or the other. In the meantime, avoid them as best you can, or pray for rain.

I was wondering how the city biking is in Australia? I'll be in Melbourne from the beginning of December to the end of January. I plan on biking everyday are the streets in Melbourne fairly bike friendly? Are there some nice ridesout of the city?

Any advice from Aussie natives is appreciated. I also noticed that there will be a Critical Mass ride in Melbourne on New Years Eve.

Thanks.

Yes, Melbourne streets are pretty bike friendly. Lots of on road bike lanes, good selection of off road bike paths. I ride to work at least twice a week and 70% of my (16km) ride is on off-road, well maintained bike path. You get the occasional moron, but you get them whatever you're doing!

Check out http://www.bv.com.au for lots of info about riding in Melbourne.

Thanks for info link,

I'm looking forward to getting off the icy streets on Minneapolis in December and hitting 80 degree temps in Melbourne. I'll pass on a white christmas anytime for sun and dry pavement.

Wow! I had to add this to my post, what a great resource site. I had been looking for Melbourne bike maps for a while now, thanks again

I don't really have a problem with other bike commuters here in Chicago, but I do have a problem with people on roller blades.....seriously who commutes on roller blades. They are a pain in the ass to get around.
