So I bought a used 2009 gary fisher xcaliber, everything is stock, it came in the mail with the handlebars and both tires removed. I got the bars on and both tires on but the rear derailer is not quite right. the chain is super loose....the derailer moves back and forth freeley? Im sure its an easy fix but knowing nothing about bikes...Im stumped.

Thanks in advance

Shane

I think we'll need some pix. Each is worth a thousand words, you know...

While waiting for the pic's, might it be the case that the derailer was bolted to the frame with the pivot tab in front of the frame's hanger tab? The tabs are roughly below the derailer's attachment to the frame, and the derailer's tab should be behind the frame's tab to pivot the derailer back and create tension in the chain.

Is the chain routed through the derailer cage properly? Does the chain wrap around (behind and over) the rear wheel sprockets? If the rear wheel was removed, this last detail is not a given.

Lastly, one of the derailer's pivot springs may have broken. No too uncommon.

im pretty sure the chain is routed correctly. the derailer itself move front to back freely? no tension what so ever. also there is a tab on the back side that doesnt seem to be in the correct spot. I may just have to take it somewhere...kind of hard to explain...and im sure its an easy fix If you know what your doing
