...and gorgeous ones at that!

I stopped in for a peek when I was in A'dam...small shop, two gentleman.

They had beautiful "racing" bikes as well as sleek city bikes with upright bars.

Pricey.

I love the styling of this bike -- gunmetal finish and nifty classic-y tube markings and headbadge.

Yes, very nice. Personally I am often a bit disappointed with the part selection for the displayed exemples. I think it is treat of more European builders, like for example Nöll and Vittorio. Check their sites too and you know what I mean.

The RIH site is in Dutch indeed. Most basic two pages website: home page and contact details. Apparently the people know to find them anyway.

The website is informing us on RIH history, including that RIH built frames were raced to no less than 63 olympic and world titles.

They also do touring and randonneur frames under the name 'Vainqueur'.

Of course everything is custom made and people is offered the option of bringing their old RIH for a full finishing.

Raleigh has a few steel 2011 road bikes that are "inspired" by the classics. The top tubes slope a bit on some models, but there are a few that are relatively affordable. http://www.raleighusa.com/bikes/steel-road/

This.

There are lots of talented framebuilders' wares on display at NAHBS, and one of my favorites is Dave Wages, the owner and sole framebuilder at Ellis Cycles (http://www.elliscycles.com/). Dave won "Best of Show" at the 2010 NAHBS in Richmond, and his work is flawless. Here's a recent example. It's a polished Reynolds 953 stainless steel frameset. Note the clean brazing and lack of any file marks on the polished surfaces around the lug shorelines. He honed his skills at Serotta and Waterford before hanging out his shingle.

Absolutely. Now that vintage steel is all the rage, all of the big companies are now making "retro" models and there are a ton of johnny-come-lately frame builders emerging (which is a good thing). But I have a healthy amount of respect for all the European and American shops that have been continuously making classic steel frames through the dark decades of aluminum and carbon mass produced frames. If I decide to buy a new frame, it'll be from one of those guys.

In Italy, Tommasini still makes classic steel racing-style bikes.

A bunch of other small-scale or custom builders might qualify:
- Curt Goodrich (esp. the Randonneuse)
- Hampsten (both classic road race designs and the Tournesol all-road designs)
