Hey everyone,
While I'm an avid mountain biker, I'm new to road cycling and I'm hoping to get some tips on good places to ride in the area. I live in Federal Way, so anything close to there is best.
I am riding to train for an Ironman 70.3 this summer, so long stretches of trail/road with low traffic are ideal.
Also, I'm looking for a used road bike. My budget is low ($300) so I don't have high expectations, just something that is reliable. Any tips on where to look or what to look for are appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

You should check out Cascade's online site for bikes as well as the upcoming bike swap in Feb... http://www.cascade.org/EandR/bikeswap/index.cfm

As for riding in our area, there are plenty! Best thing I can suggest is checking in with the local shops/clubs like Phil's in FedWay, Tacoma Bike (tacomabike.com), Tacoma Wheelmen (twbc.org), South Sound Tri's ( southsoundtriathletes.com). Once you get a few rides in with these groups and events you'll find some good routes you can connect and do on your own.

When I lived in tukwila, I used to take loops down the river valley east of you, and into the hills and trees futher east around maple valley, enumclaw, renton ,sumner, auburn et al, I used county maps to plan the routes worked pretty, often I'd do a loop without a map. Somtimes I'd take loops toward the sound or take afferry accross and ride to another landing and ride home form where it let me off. I've moved abck to Spokane for less rain and traffic
