Southern California - Emergency vehicle at the Katella rest area

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Yesterday, Sunday Jan 2, around 4 pm we were driving on Katella and went over the SART. I glanced over and saw some commotion going on there. There was an emergency vehicle and some people there. Does anyone know what happened?

It could be completely coincidental, but a customer brought his mangled tarmac in to the LBS (in HB) where my buddy works. The customer was side-swiped by a car and was thrown through a parked car's rear window. The offending side-swiper did not stop. The front end of the the bike was sheared off just behind the HT. The customer was apparently well enough to head out to the LBS yesterday- so no major injuries, AFAIK.

Again, this may be completely unrelated to what you saw. I'm unaware if this customer's crash happened on New Year's Day or yesterday.

Rode past there around noon. Not many cyclists, but tons of transient folks that showed up for the free food.

Probably one of the homeless wanted some Obama care and called emergency services.

I agree that it is most likely transient rather than cyclist related.

Yowza! One should always drink a toast to his own good fortune when you can walk away from such an event!

One would argue the transients are also cyclists as they all have bikes! Some pretty nice ones too. Afraid to find out how they got them.

Some are more than likely stolen, as was the case with my Fuji Track that was stolen and later recovered in the posession of a bum. They'll cut a lock, in case one might wonder if I had been careless and left my bike unlocked somewhere.

As far as emergency vehicles at the Katella bum stop, it's a common sight there. I work right next to it and have seen emergency vehicles there all hours of the day and night.

I usually start at Green river, but where would someone park if they wanted to start at the intersection ?

In the city of Orange, where the bum hangout is, the homeless can go to certain churches and get a free bike voucher, good for $100 towards a bicycle at the Salvation Army. I have also seen a orange pastor give 3 homeless men each a brand new mountain bike worth well over $1000(2 were confinscated by OPD when they found the said bums with the bike until the pastor could vouch for them with receipts and all).

There are a ton of bums with bikes in Orange. I see them at the Circle (technically Orange Plaza Square... the traffic circle) all the time. There are halfway houses nearby and everybody gives them money which allows them to purchase booze and drugs so they don't leave. It's a constant problem for Orange PD.

Seeing that it's not hot outside (no heat stroke), there is no traffic, and no blind spots for cyclists to collide, I have to agree that the EMT's were there for one of the homeless people rather than a cyclist. Maybe one of the bums OD'ed in the bathroom?

All of the parking lots nearby are private and the closest street parking in on Main just South of Katella.

Thanks Crit.

I think the homeless should start their own team...

They have embraced the bike touring life style, but the long coats are a giveaway. Not quite that Roadie look.

I envisioned an industrial trike bum mobile with a unit that would deploy into a shelter with a backpacker kitchen. Sort of like a VW camper done small. Solar panel to charge up the laptop and cell phone. (There was one up in SLO who had both.)

This crowd has it better than the ones down at the mouth of the LA River. The Katella Rest Area has four flushies, picnic tables, water, etc. Down on the LARIO there were tents by one underpass where none had been in spring. Also tents down on the river bank. Bummer when it really rains.

There's usually plenty of parking on Rampart, south of the stadium (it's World Champion Way into the stadium; Rampart is the street south of the stadium). It's where the fire-training facility is, but be careful how far south you park, as it's no parking in the Orange city limits end of the street, south of the office buildings. There's a large lot on Katella, across from the Pond, where I often see people getting ready to ride or putting everything away after, west of the trail. There's also limited parking in a dirt lot on the north side of Lincoln between the trail and R J Noble's quarry.
