Hey everyone,

My daily commuter currently has a Sturmey Archer AW3. If you're familiar with these hubs you'll know the first gear can be very troublesome. Mine is no exception. My 2nd and 3rd work perfectly, and I am willing to live with just two gears. However, my commute is very hilly and is also fairly stop-and-go. Therefore I need a low gear!

Right now, I have a 47t front and an 18t rear, and I was thinking of getting a bigger rear so that my 2nd and 3rd gears become '1st' and '2nd' gears. Does anyone have a good suggestion on what size to get? I'd like to approximate the real -25% 1st, and 1:1 2nd.

I run a 46/22 on my Raleigh Superbe, you can get them as large as 26t from BikeSmith Designs (http://bikesmithdesign.com/cogs/index.html).

I just checked out Sheldon Brown's awesome gear ratio calculator, and figured out that going up to a 24 would give me the equivalent of 1st and 2nd, with my 2nd and 3rd. However, after thinking about it more, I think I'll go with a 21 to minimise the chance of having to get a longer chain.

You need to work on your hub , maybe the low gear pawls are not working well ,

You can buy a whole new core, the new NIG stuff is interchangable, SJS in UK has NOS hub cores.

I have an AW3 in my Brompton Folder, got 3 more gears , out of the 2nd range offered by

Schlumpf Mouthain drive, that was made to turn practical 3 speeds into Mountain climbers .
low gear a planetary so chain stays on the same chainring.
