"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Training questions on transitioning from CX to road

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm in the process of putting together my training plan for next year. I picked up the Training Bible over winter break and will be following a periodized plan for the first time but I can't seem to find any info on how racing a full CX season impacts planning for road.
What have you guy's done? It seems like a lot of people are well into Base 1 or 2 and I haven't even started yet. Last cross race was Nats in the beginning of Dec. Not sure if I should just start as described in the book, shorten a base period, adjust other parts of the plan...
I'm aiming to start this Saturday. Since Nats I've just been spinning around on the road, MTBing, and doing some regular calisthenics stuff I do.

Check out some of the case studies in Friel's book to get an idea of how to build a multi peak season, it helped me.
Unfortunately it seems that in order to reach you're full potential(cat 3 and higher) in either discipline you will probably have to focus on one more than the other. Or, shorten both cx and the road season a bit to avoid burnout, overtraining, injury, etc.
For me hear in WI the road and cx seasons are relatively short so I'm able to give priority to both, although road is where my major goals lie. Fwiw my last cx race was at the end of Nov and I've been riding between 4-6hrs(mostly rollers) a week since with basically no structure besides "easy" or <75%ftp. I'm starting my first base period next week in order to peak in mid/late june, racing starts in early April for me.
Is there a reason why you wouldn't be able to do the full 3 base and 2 build periods?

It's a work backwards scenario. When are your road "A" races? You can manipulate things to be "better" but not necessarily optimum if your "A" road stuff is early, there's give and take and a big individual component and event type/duration component to be factored into this.
