Mountain - Plains - Longmont, CO rentals?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Will be traveling to Longmont in a couple of weeks and am wondering if one can rent a decent roadie anywhere abouts?
And, how are the road conditions shaping up around there anyways?
Thanks,
Josh

Hey, there are several places to rent high quality road bikes in Boulder, only 20 minutes from Longmont. I'd start with University Bikes. http://ubikes.com/articles/bike-rentals-pg432.htm
Trek, Bicycle Village, and Boulder Bikesmith also rent bikes.
Road conditions are good right at the moment, but it's highly variable in winter. It was too snowy to ride 3 days ago, and it's going to snow again on Sunday. If it snows and stays cold, it can be a problem, but if it's sunny for even a couple of days, the roads melt and you're good to go. They do sand the shoulders, but it's manageable. Be prepared to ride in about 35-40 degree temps, or even colder if you don't have a lot of flexibility about which day(s) you can ride. There are lots of nice roads between Longmont and Boulder, and also north of Longmont - if you tell me more about where you are in Longmont and how long of a ride you want to do, I could make some suggestions.

I kind of figured I would end up renting in Boulder, so that's cool. As far as location goes, we're visiting family just off N Foothills Highway almost between Longmont and Lyons. Google makes it look like there's probably some good routes around there?
Thanks for your help,
Josh

Sure! Hwy 66 (Ute Hwy) is OK to ride on, all the roads in the triangle between Boulder Lyons and Hygiene are good to ride on. 75th is a really nice smooth N/S road, 63rd is good too, Hwy 36 is OK, so pick any of the connectors and make squares as big as you like - Hygiene ROad, St. Vrain Road, Nelson Rd, Neva/Niwot Rd are the good E/W roads. Rabbit Mtn off Hwy 66 is a little climb that's ok even in winter. The county roads up towards Carter Lake and Masonville & HOrstetooth Dam are really nice (go north on 75th). Pretty much, stay west of 95th to have better traffic & roads.
The canyons are great in all seasons but winter, but you pretty much can't ride them right now.
Here's a sample loop with climbing that should be OK as long as the roads generally clear, to the north:

and here's some roads to the south that are nice - just a sample, many options in this area, all the roads are good except 55th/51st near the reservoir, which is dirt. lots of the little farm roads you see are dirt, but it's pretty hard to get lost, the mountains are west.
have a nice visit!

Is just getting started, but hopefully soon they will have a network of local people all over the country renting out bicycles ranging from cruisers to carbon fibers.
