Mountain Biking - Best bike computer for mountain biking

Need some advice. I need an inexpensive (<$100) bike computer for my mountain bike and was wondering what folks here are using?

I've always liked the Cateye Micro Wireless. All the basic functions, bar or stem mounts and no wires to route along a suspension fork.

Anything wireless will always trump wired. If you're going to get a Cateye, Tte Micro Wireless is clunky and old compared to the newer, cheaper and easier-to-use Strada Wireless. I still have one on my road bike but for my MTB, I'm using a Knog Nerd 12. Both the head unit and the fork unit mount using a silicone loop so its easy to remove and clean and the numbers are much bigger. If you ride at night, the Nerd 12 also comes with a backlight that the Nerd 9 doesn't have.

Very widely subjective. On road bikes I always was a Garmin Edge guy due to all the fancy analization <mispelled I am sure!:lol: features. But in heavy canopy you need something that does not rely on seeing the sky. I opt for the Cateye wireless models. Great functions and easy on the bank account for sure. I have both double wireless and single. Great pieces.

I don't have a computer on my mountain bike. The Cateye Strada Cadence on my road bike is great though. Very easy to read and use. If you don't care about cadence, you can go with the wireless version, as the posters above said.

I have broke a couple of computers on my MTBs for that fact, on bikes I don't use my Polar on like the wife's, kids or a extra. But if the break you don't loose much. I usually brake or loose the censor on the fork when things go bad. Let me look in my box o swag, I may have one you can have James. I know crashing is never a concern for you so go all out! :)

Like the above poster said I like the Cateye, I have them on all my road and tandem bikes.

+1 on the Cateye Strada Wireless. Can be had for a great price, and Cateye's warranty and customer service can't be beat!

i think going wireless is just a preference. i use a wired on my mountain bike and have not broke it yet. i just bought a cheap one at walmart. plus i would rather just buy 1 battery instead of 2.

Thanks everyone. I just remember the computers I used to have always falling off in the rough stuff and was hopeful the mounts were better now. No real issues with them falling off (barring crashes)?

Any can come off in a crash if it hits right. I have to say with my Cateye Strada's however............I had a horriffic crash this past summer while jumping a berm. I told my wife to go ahead and photo my jump. I came around the blind curve where the berm was and with some speed I made my jump. In mid air as I gained about 5 feet off the ground and made about 15 feet through the air it dawned on me................my wife was dead middle of the path! Poor girl! She is new to the sport and did not know to get on the side of the path. Needles to say, I braked hard in the air to start a downward descent and when I hit ground I slid as best I could to avoid her but hit her bike and ripped off her back wheel. My bike the saddle twisted and the handlebars rotated from the hit! Both bikes fine, me with some bragging injuries and a few laughs and the bike computer safely still attached.

my bike computer is held onto my bike using reusable zip ties. i know if i had one on my winter bike i would have broke the computer off already. i broke the top off my 1 shifter.

No huge amount of bells or whistles the Enduro 8 is rugged and cheap. I have beaten mine to death and even replaced the wire unit mount (real cheap cost) . Wireless are ok, but this thing is really reliable as far as I'm concerned. http://www.cateye.com/en/product_detail/254
