Mountain Biking - 20 mm Thru Axles. Generic?

I have a problem with my 20 mm thru axle. Are they generic or do I need to get dealer parts??

nope. different forks/makers use different axles. the standard of the axle dimensions for the hub fitment are the same, but not the actual axles. what's your fork?

I've got a Marzocchi Bomber fork. 600mm travel.

^^ Good move. To answer your question, the Marz QR20 was a very specific axle meant for Marz forks with the QR20 dropouts - - a very strange system.

So that would be a race-specific system? Needing to swap out front wheels in a race would be a tedious chore with my present setup. But blowing out a front wheel in a race and repairing the bike would probably be the least of my concerns. Set-up is pretty near fail-proof.

^^ Not a racing thing. Most people racing in a situation where a quick wheel change would help their chances aren't running 20mm thru axles anyway :).

It was something that Marz developed for the Jr. T (and maybe some long-travel single crowns?) - - basically DH/FR-oriented forks to make them more trail-riding friendly. My son had an early-'00s Jr. T with that setup. It was a fussy PIA.

When I put in the offer on eBay, I'd offered a price where I could buy a new fork and swap it out. Assumed I wouldn't keep it. Get one in the 350 - 450mm range. That was until my first run down into the "Devils Cradle". wow - Thought hasn't crossed my mind since.

Of course, it's a little jump to mount and it's hard to get in the back of my Minivan but who cares.

I've never seen a fork with 600mm of travel, let alone 350-450mm of travel...that is crazy!

It's really nice on a steep DH, as that's what it's designed for. I'd first assumed, it needed that much clearance to absorb impact. Why I assumed I was gonna ditch it. I'm a few decades beyond Red Bull Rampage.

On my old MTB, if I go down a steep DH, I'm getting that pitch-over-the handlebars feeling. Can be a self fulfilling prophecy if I start braking and sliding sideways.

With the high front end, you don't have to hang your butt over the rear wheel. Leading to less braking. Retain the ability to have children.

Sorry but we're actually making fun of you. They don't make 600mm travel forks or 350-450mm travel forks. I didn't look that closely at the pictures you posted but I'd guess you have around 150mm of travel on that fork.

most likely you have a 6 inch travel fork which is nothing to sneeze at. That was back when Marzocchi forks were the best!

I'd ask what fork is better now, but this fork is fine for me. It's good in snow also!
