Bicycle Mechanics - sram 3x7 internal hub...any alternate shifters that will work with it?

I'm looking to possibly use a sram 3x7 on my trek 1100, but cant find any specs on it. Basiacally, I'm trying to work towards making that bike a full blown commuter/daily duty rig, and think that going to a single chainring/chain guard will just make more sense than having to constantly roll up my pant leg.
Will this thing fit an old 7-speed aluminum frame, and more importantly will it work with anyhting other than the twist shifter they want you to use? I really don't want to ghetto rig something,and dont wnat to replace the handlebars since I like my drop bars so much.

Key words unique single sided shifter. Also, according to the manual it's designed for 135mm dropouts so it's doubtful you'll be able to swing it without spreading the stays a bit, which on an aluminum frame isn't a good idea.

ugh....are the old sturmey-archer 3-speeds able to fit in a 7-speed frame? I might have to rig somehting up I guess. I saw a bike on sheldon brown's site with a 7-speed cfreewheel on a sturmkey archer 3-sp hub, but I dunno if he had to spread the frame any.

S/A's should work just fine. Remember that Sheldon is a bit of a maverick when it comes to his personal builds. Why the internal hangup?.

I just wnat to move to a single chainring so i can use a chainguard, but i would still like to have the 21 speeds, which will be especially good for dealing with the hills out here.
I had a 3-speed AW Sturmey hub with a 14-16-18-20 cogset designed for 1/8" chain, and the whole thing fit into a standard (at the time) 120mm rear triangle. The biggest problem with the Sturmey hybrids is finding a long axle.
The thing I dislike about internal hubs is that they preclude use of a quick release in back.

Well, I found a way to live with the twist shifter, Sheldon had another pearl of wisdom in his site, about using a mtn bike bar end, cutting it down to length, and mounting that bar end to the quill stem. It may not be pretty, but it will work. Expecially given how high my stem had to be to be able to actually get a proper fit.
Now, to find a suitable hub...this might be one whale of a project..but hey, I gotta have at least one customized bike :D
