So I've just received my license from USAC and am wondering if there's any reason I shouldn't laminate it. For some reason you're not supposed to laminate your SSN card (first line on the back) and that would likely see a lot less use than a race license.

Any thoughts?

Make a copy of it.
Then laminate the copy.

I put clear packing tape on the front. The letters/numbers rub off in a few months if you carry your license in your wallet.

I cut the tape with scissors so there are no serrated tape edges.

Good idea to laminate a copy. My brother used to make copies of some audio tapes and use the copies to keep the original from wearing out.

you're doing it wrong...

yeah - make a copy, laminate the copy.
If you get upgrade stickers, you can add them and they won't slide off. The adhesive can get hot and slip/slide off the laminate.

Some people make a copy of the USAC waiver with their license on it, not a bad idea (the form was also pre-filled with their info).

Umm, so I'm dumb. What's the problem you're trying to correct that can't be done by logging into usac and printing out the "authorization to ride" dealie if your license gets messed up?

i've found the license to be pretty sturdy and never had a reason to consider laminating it. i've worked registration at lots of events and cant recall anyone having laminated their usac license, or anyone's being in such bad condition that it would have warranted it.

I was thinking that if your license got (too) messed up then you'd have to have it reissued. Also, I'm a little sentimental, and would like to take care of my first license so didn't want it to wind up shredded somehow. I also didn't know if you had to present the original license at packet pickup or if a scan/photo etc would work. I've got a lot of questions, but didn't see it necessary to blow up a long thread about them since there's so many on here already. That, and I figured it'd be more fun to figure it out along the way myself.

Reg (as in reggie or registration) is straight forward. You need your license or authorization to race - printed from the site. I have been able to use smart phones where the user can log in to USAC and verify license number and status.

At registration the intent is to make sure you have paid for a license and are authorized to race. If it's local and the people know then things are a little different....

"Dude....where's your license?"
"Sonnuva....forgot it."
"Know your number?"
"Yeah. 67074."
"Yup. K sign here. Numbers left side today. good luck and kick some ass."

A bit off topic here, but does anyone know how long the junior waiver processing generally takes?

That thing where all you adults just check the box that says "I release USAC from liability blah blah blah," I had to actually print a waiver and mail it to USAC headquarters. They said they'd process it and add it to my license process but I have no idea how to tell when or how they do it.

I've sent an email already and heard nothing. I sent the waiver in like two weeks ago.

FWIW all my licenses here (and UCI licenses) have come laminated already. I still have a bunch in a drawer. I'd say go ahead.

Last race we got a handy post-race wash up kit that included a face cloth, soap, shampoo, a toothbrush and toothpaste and one little bottle of indeterminate use.

We always get a T-shirt (my shop shirts) and a water bottle (the one we chuck during the race) and some really weird crap from time to time.

No, but you can stop by the table and buy all sorts of nationals gear at a small additional fee. Ha ha ha ha

FWIW at nationals the grab bags included the park bike repair book, which just about everyone promptly tossed back in the box. I had Spawn scoop up the copies of it, the shop eBayed them for me, and my trip was paid for.

I laminate my licenses (USAC & ACA) every year to avoid wear from being in my wallet. Also, I saw a few references to "just know the number", I've run into a few sticklers who won't let you register unless you actually show them the license. Kind of silly if you know your number, but it's their prerogative as organizers to require you to have it.
