Hi guys got this bike with record c 8 speed d/t shifters and the right one (rd one) has its bolt jammed, it is stuck and no way to take it at least with a hand. There is a trick to get it out w/o having to grab a set of pliers to get the darn bolt out?

Thanks.

If it's the 5mm bolt that goes through the lever to the boss on the frame, no there's no trick except more torque.

It's possible the prior owner had issues with keeping the lever adjusted, and rather than fix it right he resorted to loctite.

Other possible causes include rusting in place when installed dry, or in some cases being forced into threads partly clogged with braze.

It's a standard 5x.8 metric screw, other than cosmetics and the wingnut head. I've seen the wings break off when forced, so your best option is to grab it with pliers using the wing for a purchase and turn it out. If you're careful you might salvage it, otherwise buy a replacement, but use a bottoming or plug tap to clean the thread first.

Thanks FBinNY... the wings came out hahaha :) Used a big ass set of pliers and came out after 2 turns, yes you were right there was blue loctite in the screw. I just managed to put the wings back into the screws, another quick question, those levers are friction? I know some models can be changed to friction but have no idea if this ones are able to do it, some way to know?

Uman.

To my knowledge, Campy never made levers that could change from index to friction. As long as they're complete, you should be able to rebuild them to their original condition. If your levers are friction the outer cover plate needs to be a tight fit on the boss, otherwise it'll work back and forth as you shift. I mention this because that might be the problem the prior had that led him to use loctite.

If you have the same issue, focus on improving the fit of the cover rather than the screw.

THanks :) I'll put a shimano 10 friction ones i have moving around then, no more problems. Love campy but some of their old products to respond to shimano really sucked hehe

Yeah, as FBinNY mentioned early Campy friction dt levers were notorious for spontaneous loosening. I had a set on an older Bridgestone (so I could claim "Campy equipped" :)) and after the third or fourth experience with "ghost shifting" when they came loose, I changed them for a set of Sun Tour Power Ratchet shifters and the problem disappeared for good.

Thats the reason i moved to suntour superbe back in my racing days. The campy was were a nightmare. Got a set of shimano 9's and are pretty nice in friction. Oh i have a bike with the seatpost bolt campy so it means my bike is campy equiped also? :P
