Yes, they would be a bad choice - in general - for riding.

Spin rims are very, very weak and would last about 2 hours for most flatlanders.
When asked to test them for DIRT - the rider snapped them on his second run through the course. Yes, he bailed - but on his FIRST bail, they broke.
Waste, waste, waste of money!
Chrome plated rims with a freecoaster are what you want for flat if you can afford it.
Chrome plated with NO freecoaster if you can't afford it.

Kids who own Target or KMart bieks probably can't afford Spin wheels, as they probably cost as much as the complete does. And as for who actualyl does use them, the answer is racers.

Spin rims rock! I have had a set on my bike for 5 yrs and have had no problems.
however do they make them anymore?
what kind of riding do you do with them, what are they made of.

maybe carbon? is that just the name or the material? you would think its the material
its possible that they're made of carbon/carbon fiber, but rims made of carbon, wouldnt be able to stand up to much besides just riding with out jumps or bumps for that matter.

Spin Rims are made of carbon fiber. Trust me they have see some nasty off road XC trails over the last 5 years. They are still true and never had a problem. Well woth the 5 bones I put down for them. Not to mention the Bling they add to the bike - turnes every head for a second look.

it would be hard, because they don't even have real hubs

***sigh***
A fair number of the old (Original!) Skyway mags used the classic Japanese Suntour hub inside. It most definitely uses a traditional hub. Except, instead of low flanges that spkes run through, it uses a larger flange that bolts directly into the mag. Mags, therefore, not only use real hubs, they are designed to accept a wide variety of different styles of hubs as long as they are made to fit inside the mag correctly.
There is no reason that mags can't accept a regular freewheel hub, downdrive style, cassette - from any manufacturer, or freecoaster, etc.
But, most mags only come with a single style of hub inside and very few options to upgrade or change things out.
OH: And mags are never cool.

Spin makes (or made) 20" and 26" wheels. They probably made 700C too.

Yes, Spin didn't just make 20" wheels, they made 20" wheels specifically for BMX freestyle. They were called the Spin Thug wheels...
and in their third run down through the dirt course at Woodward, the guy bailed, came down a little sideways, and the rim snapped.
MAGS SUCK FOR BMX
There is no doubt in my mind that there is a place for certain products in certain areas of our sport, but mags & bmx don't mix. No matter how often Hoffman insists upon riding vert with mags, it is always a temporary thing he does because he is Mat and that's what he does.
I was just pointing out the sizes, as Kentic was getting a bit rude. I've seen one Spin wheel at the races, but I think the guy only runs a front one.

what about just in the front..like front wheel only becuase it takes less abuse most of the time (it can also take the 3/8" axle...plus some Pros do it...(Spin Wheel Billy)

Look, if someone is gung-ho on running a Spin wheel, or a MotoMag, or a Peregrine Master mag on their bike, I'm not going to stop them. Heck, run it up front, on back, put one on as a seat - it's YOUR bike.
Mags are just basically proven to be inferior to rims in bmx. It's your money and your bike to do with what you want, but I hate when people say 10,000 times "Don't do it!" then someone does it anyway... and complains when it sucks!
If you do it, and it sucks, don't complain. If you do it, and you love it, and it works well for you for AT LEAST SIX MONTHS - then you can talk about how good it is. After a week, or a day, you won't really know how well it holds up.
Heck, I rode mags for the first year or two of my riding. I ended up cracking them, but they did work for me alright. It just took a few years for me to realize how much better things could be.
